mrriam says, the August term of our
Court closed laot Saturday. A number of
cases wore disposed cf, thnngh not many
of much importance. Law business is not
as fljuri.-liiiii; in this or the adjoining
counties, as it was some ten or fifteen years
since. lied in Sunbury, on Sunday
week, Gideon M. Yorks, Koj., aged about
4 years. His death was sudden and un
expected. The deceased came to this place
about '20 years siuee. He possessed ex
cellent business qualifications, and was cm
ployed iu various clerical capacities. Last
session he represented this county iu the
Igs1ature, and had he lived, would un
doubtedly have been re-elected this fall.
But such is the vanity of all things human.
On Tuesday week, Annanias Morgan,
son of Isaiah Morgan, of Sbaraokin town
ship, about 19 years of age, was killed by
falling from a tree, a distance of 40 feet.
He was engaged in putting up a swing for
a Sunday School celebratin. Samuel
A. Bergstresser, of Shamokin, was renomi
nated for Assembly by tho Whig conven
tion on Monday week. No other nomina
tions were mado.
Arrival of the Pacific.
New York, Aug. 22. Tho steamship
Pacific arrived this morning, from Liver
pool, with European dates to the 11th inst.
The general aspect of the news from the
seat of war is unsatisfactory. Tho bom
bardment of Sebastopol was resumed on
the 10th.

The Italian General l'epc is dead.
It is definitively stated, but still seems
questionable, that Spain will supply 25,000

rent that Judge Klin i 're, of Kansas, in

fever at Norfolk. The papers of that city
state that the disease is attacking the bet-

Uostos, An jr. 21. The mechanics at
ti10 Xavy Yard at Charlestown have voted
a Jay's ,,ny as a donation for the benefit of
the mechanics at the Navy Yard at os-
port. The amount will reach nearly 1500.
PnoViKENCE, Aug. 21. Prof. Barnas
Scars, was to-day elected President of
I'.rown University, in place of Prof. Way
land, resigned, after a rcry long aud ho
norable service, aud much regretted.
