A Sphinx in the Cabinet
A A'aliiugtou paper says that Mr. Dc
Leon, the United States Consul General
iu Ejjpt, liiw sent over lo Mr. Marcy, for
tlie State D-paxttneut, an antique Sphinx,
having the body of alien and the face of
a young woman, and carved all over with
hicri'g'ypliica and re; rcsojtations of lulls,
beetles, scorpions, gt, crocodiles, anl

the Sptiiux 10 Lis embrace, acd it is prob
able destined to become an important
inetulicr of the Pierce administration. In
the first place it must, however, declsro its
intentions to become an American citiz-n,
and although tie gender cf the Sphinx
family has hecu disputed from the most
remote antiquity, we presume the Democ
racy will have uo difficulty in cstallis-iiii;:
the faet that this one is of proper sex, in
Dpite of the f.aiinitic head, and that it will
before lot;g be quite as fit to cxircise the

JJut the public would respectfully at
to be informed what office the Sphinx is
destined to Ell al Washington. If it is
to resume its oil business of propounding
enigmas and devout ing the inhabitants
wheu they can uot solve them, it will find
its proper sphere in Washington. We have
had puzzles and botherations without num
ber since tho 4th of March, 153. The
people have never yet been able to under
stand the Nebraska enigma, the tlrcvtown
enigma, the Oateud enigma, the St. Dom
ingo enigma, and many others; and if the
Sphnix of theWhite House has not de
Toured them, it has been simply because
mch food disagrees terribly with the Pros- j

workiug cut a solution of all these puz
zels, and when bcy have arrived at it, our
Presidential Sphin t will be quite ready to
dash his head apainst a rock. Iu the
meantime our E'vntian Sphinx must have I
work a.-sig'icd him iu the Cabinet. Mr.
Guthrio might employ such a hard shell
individual in tho Treasury Department,
for ho would be very useful in getting up
Treasury reports and proposing iusoluble
problems of Tree Trade. Mr. Campbell
