One. warm Sabbath afternoon, tbe pas
tor, thinking that those who had no inte
rest in the subject of religion would most
likely fall asleep, preparcdliiinself to preach
directly to the church.
The Deaeon was on band, to "parcel"
out the sermon as fast as it came from the
lips of the minister. Tho pastor com
menced with his cloae fisted, penurious
Irelhren, plain1 but earnestly.
''Jh.it belong to brother Grant, said
tha Deacon. The next remark was de
signed for those who went about doing
g.od, but mado so much noise aud parade
about it, as to destroy a great part of the
good thty intended to do.
'That is sister Qrimpkius," said Deaeon
Jo, "no mistaking that."
The pastor continued his sermon, but
the Deacon,who had worked hard through
the week. fell in'o a dozing slumber. Nev
ertheless, although the body of the deacon
was sleeping, the iniud was active, and,
whahcr the cars performed their functions
or not, each portion was as faithfully par
celled out as though the deacon bad been
trida awake.
''Finally, my brethren,' concluded the
parson, "there is clots of persons who
listen attentively to every sermon, but
who are so free hearted and benevolent
that they do not retain, any for themselves,
bat parcel it out among their brethren
cd titters."
"Thunder ! that's me," said Deaeon Jo,
the sound of bis voice awaking Liin, "and

Whether the deacon continued the
practice of "parcelling out the sermon"
afterwards we know not, but we presume
if be did, be kept a small portion for him

Meantime tbe. wralthy mother sits in
her easy-chair, on its rich embroidered
over, mid comfort everywhere, and won
ders what they mean those people that
aie poor prating of their troubles,
which they think they endure. "If they
only had her trials knew what she un
derwent, they'd think that all the vials of
wrath were on them spent ;" which sets
os thinking, reader, that, if rightly esti
mated, one-half of all our sorrows are
eadly overrated. And the moral of our
rhyme, though prosily it runs, is never
lorroto trouble, but take it as it comes.
