the New Berlin story tellers, that they
either did not vote, or voted against their
petitions. That's our honest opinion, neigh
bors; for confirmation of which, wc refer to
Franklin, Ferry, and other districts where
they petitioned one way and then chose to

outside of Selinsgrove and Lewisburg ?''

A Division Lawyer was called upon for
advice as to the right of a ctrtain aiirn-born
citizen (whose father was naturalized while
he as a minor) to vole, which he gave in his
favor, and not doubting but he was "all
right" declined receiving any compensation
for writing out a legal opiuion ; the paper had
f weight with the Election Board, and in went a
ticket plump against Division t
Several of "our foreign brethren" were de
termined to vote against Division, because
thry were assured that Lewisburg harbored
a great many of "Sam's" confederates ; and
nothing conld correct this evil tendency but
repeated doses of K. N. popper antidotes com
pounded by Dr. Kooas (rum the New Berlin
American Flag.
The polls closed. Muddied and tired, hun
dreds bad gathered in the hotels and telegraph
office in Lewisburg, nntil White Deer, Kelly,
Buffiloe, West Buffaloe, Mifflinburg, Lime-

About the same hour. New Berlin had all
her good news, and was indulging in an illu
mination on a limited scale. "Din Neb" was
in with the biggest kind of majorities from
"the Beavers" and "them Center districts.
He hail tutiicieut, he thought, to knock dawn
the heaviest opposing majorities as usual. It
happeaed, however, that Micu. had slipped
down to Selnisrove to get the returns ; and
having heard from that region and around
Lewisburg by the wires, he drove home and
advised "the boys" not to "count any chiekens"
yet awhile. N it Ion j after, the news became
too hot j "the Beavers and Centers" fi r once
were overpowered ; aud Nm mounted "old
grey" and turned his back to New Berlin
' more in sorrow than in anirer."
It is remembered that when Israel" started
with his family from Iongstown to Selinsprove,
not quite two years ago, the Longstnwnrrs
rung their bells in special honor of llie exiles.
It was not a very desirable notice of an unof
fending family; but Urael exhibits a commen
dable spirit, and is perfectly willing to forgive
the Metropolitans if they will only let In 111 ring
their bells in honor of his visits hereafter.
The Divisionists thought they had at least
two nnwavering friends in Center (Weiricks
town,) but the Official says 0. Who put in
that ticket !" is now the inquiry of the friends
of the two men. It is a very fltty question,
which they must decide between (hem.
Oblk used to sny, lhat when they cast their
vote all on one side, down in Somerset county,
they called such districts, buWs eyn. It will
be seen that the North Ward, Lewisburg, has
a Division " bull's eye," while Center and the
Beavers are all " bull's-eyes" on the other side
of the question. (The story, on the North
side, that Middleswarth had turned for Divis
ion, was not generally credited ; those " bull's
eyes" confute the allegation in toto.and " nail
the lie to the counter" as " a base invention of
the enemy.")
One independent freeman got along very
well : he came 180 miles to vote, had his ex
penses paid, got a little office while on hand,
and is one of the 45."
The farmers must have bad " a good time of
it" plenty of distinguished visitors, who were
excellent company for dull weather and bad
traveling and as a New Berlin or Deavcr
delegation would leave one door, a Lewisburg
or Selinsgrove troop would enter another.
Occasionally, antagonistic forces would meet
face to face and then commenced the trial of
one wcarvin? put the natienro nf -
w e understand the contest sometimes exten
ded overnight to the great an.uscmcijt, no
doubt, of the " sturdy yeomanry," but some
limes notat all to the tidy housewife.
Our New Berlin friends were particularly
anxious in impressing upon the minds of all,
the absolute necessity of having this decisioa
irrevocably f.nul, wfmtcvcr it might be. The
' Allies" join in the exhortation; "so mote it
be!"
On Saturday, we telegraphed a special Da
gucrreotypist to New Berlin, to get the profiles
of the Editors who got up such big estimates
for the new Court Houses j and we here give,

The steamer Northern Light has arrived at
New York with tea days later news from Cal
ifornia. Several banks at San Francisco had

ken np, by an adjournment finally. Two
large hotels ic San Francisec have been burn
ed, and sixteen houses in Nevada and twenty
five hooses in Stockton. The Legislature of
Oregon adjourned on the 18th of February.
The Legislature of Washington Territory has
fixed on Olympia as the Capital. The serious
conflict in Australia is confirmed. Twelve of
