Horrible Outrage.
A Columbia correspondent informs us
of the death of Henry Loring, who bas
frequently been in our county prison for
intemperance. I, was for selling liquor to
this Loring, that Beitcr was fined and im
prisoned, whom Gov. Bigler afterwsrds
pardoned. Although but lately relieved
from prison, poor Loring again plunged
into dissipation, and seemed to Lave no
difficulty in procuring as much liquor as
he wanted from certain heartless liquor
sellers in Columbia, notwithstanding the
earnest remonstrances of hi wife, who is
now suffering from the inhuman treatment
of him who had vowed to protect and cher
ish her. Our correspondent says, be left
Columbia a few days ago, intoxicated, and
the next heard of him was in a stable in
the rear of some tavern in Marietta, in a
dying condition.
Tho same mail brings us a letter from
Marietta, which gives us additional facts
relating to this outrage. It appears that
on Tuesday Loring went into the Bail
road House, Marietta, kept by Louis
Ilouseal, and called for liquor, whereupon
Dr. John Houston prepared a glass of
liquor with tarter emetic, which was given
him, and which took effect soon after, by
causing violent vomiting and purging, to
the great delight of the fun seeking worthies
who enjoy such outrages upon their fellow
beings. He remained in the bar-room
until he smelt offensively, when he was
turned into the stallo to pass the night,
and this morning he was found ia an al
most lifeless condition, caused doubtless by
exposure to the damp, keen air of the
eight, with his system prostrated by the
effects of the violent drug. Ho was then
removed to a shop adjoining the tavern,
aud medical aid obtained, but death could
not be stayed ; he lingered on until after
noon. A coroner's inquest was held, and
the verdict rendered was, that Lc died
"through intemperance and exposure."
He leaves a wife and several children in
Columbia, where his remains have been
sent.
The above case is too flagrant to be per
mitted. If we understand the law the
actors in it can be indictod and severely
punished, and we hope measures will be
taken to do so at once. Lancaster Esj rert.
A Stot in Massachusetts where

for mure than eighteen years. What Las
been tLe result J Crime has not only di
minished, hut it seems to have almost in
tirely left the Vineyard. Wc are informed
that no case of crime ha come before the
Court for something like sixteen years.
The Judges go down iu one boat and
come lack in the next. While the traffic
in liqjor continued, the Courts were in
session for about two weeks in each term.
Civil case Lave been greatly dimiuithed
aud there are cow very few that come up
for trial. Here is a fact of immense im
portance. Crime and tho grog shops al
ways go togethor. Stop rura-scl!ing, and
nearly all kinds of misdemeanors and
offences against the law will instantly cease.
This fact furnishes an argument in favor
of prohibiting the rum traffic, sgaiust
which no man can say a word.
