Important Decision.
O-i Thursday last, Justice ISlack, of the
Supreme Court, gave a decision ic several
cases from Allegheny county, wberean al
derman had fined tavern keepers $50 for
selling liquor on tbe Sabbath. The de
fendants claimed the right of trial by jury,
denying the jurisdiction of the alderman.
The deci.ion affirmed thc judgment of the
magistrate, bolding tbat such cases were
not suits at common law,but criminal pro
ceedings under a special act. All tbe oth
er judges agreed with this decision except
Judge Lewis, who contended against tbe
.i, .. - .
wooie principle oi summary conviction as
an invasion of the right of trial by jury.
