ming managers allowed to be taken, they
were sure of having four returned. ;
So odious, however, did the system be-
come, and so maiiif.ild were its evils, that
public attention was aroused, and by leg-
islative enactment in most of the States, '
Lotteries' were aboii:-hed.
Within a few years, however, wc regret
: lottery circulars, and some of which they '
'even get inserted in Pennsylvania news-1
'journals. These arc clearly opposed to
the spirit of the law against lotteries, and
a man in Harrisbnrir was reccntlv sentenced
to imprisonment for helping these Mary
land plunderers. A more rigid law against
uttering their Circulars, or publishing
their Schemes, would soon deprive them
of their power to do mischief so openly.
" GIFT CONCERT" is the usual title
of the present mode of Lottery swindling.

The best meal is the most economical for
soup. Do" not buy bones. If you boil
meat to eat, never put it in cold water.
Let it be boiling when you put the meat
iu the pot. Do not buy fresh meat a pound
or two at a time. Buy a quarter or half
a sheep. You get it at half price. Beef
or pork by the quarter is a quarter cheaper.
Do not buy your bread ready baked. It
is sixpence a pound more. Dry flour is tbe
same. Home made bread is far more nu-

Graham flour, hominy, and cracked wheat

hominy, 3c. ; oat meal, 4e. The latter is
tious food. It costs only half the price

healthy ana nutritious.
One hundred
