A might tv been expected, tbe boat yracbed the Junction just in time to see tbe caw gliJe put beyond bailing distance, and '' I knew bjr tbe imoke which to grace ful ly curled" along tbe blue Uuffa of Kalian, little Perry." tbat it as Dot " distance lent enchantment" to tbat view, and lessened its charm every moment. So abonldering uy carpet bag, with other dis aotnfitted stragglers, I trudged on foot to the point of the Island, two miles, char lend a conveyance to Dauphin, six miles, thence walked to tbe railroad four miles, tbvnce took possession of a passing freight boat, and arrived at the Capitol with flying lor. This is a great town in its way, and is getting greater every year. Col. Oniit baa ka.l the State Capitol Hotel painted a light lor, and fitted up afresh for the especial aveommodition, I bupposc, of the Uuion on ii I j division borers. Private dwellings, and lufly machine shops arc steadily fh rraMng, and every thing betokens go abeaditivenets and prosperity. It needs Ike latter certaiuly, for real estate is held at exorbitant rates, rents rnn np to a fig are tbat make the eyes of denizens of these part expand to owl-like openness, and I beard it remarked at tbe breakfast table this morning, that the cheapness of mar keting is " getting no better fast." For instance: potatoes command from $1.50 to $1 75 per buthel ; apples SI 50 ; flour $10.50 perbbl ; butter 371 to 50 cts. per lb. ; eggs 25 cts. per dozen ; beef 12 ta pur lb. ; and so on from tbe tcp of the eealc to the bottom. It is no wonder that the pipers, and " poor folks" seem to thiuk that a gastronomic millennium is some wetkt off yet. It costs less, I am told, to live iu Phila. than here. The Canal Hoard make their annual ap pointments to-morrow. Applicants arc on band thick as the locusts of Egypt and as ravenous. Their doings are no particular Mneern of mine although I have an un lacky fee simple in II. S. Mott's 180,000 j riry, that I would sell out fur half f rice, but with only a special warranty yet if the Board could only have a tithe of the anathemas and demonstrations I beard from boatmen in our. short ride down the Susquehanna Division, they would sake some clean sweeps of their employees, and perhaps be so obliging as to wind up the operation by politely hoisting themselves out, by the seat of their own breeches. Bat as office holders don't' commit a frlo eh te after tbat fashion, I suppose such a patriotic result is not to be anticipated just t present. Besides, with a Whig admin istration coming in, the Canal Board may b accessary, to preserve the public morals ! No other public news of any special importance, My next may be from Pitts barf, or the Queen City. u. c. a. The Recent State Elections. NEW YORK. The Legislature is largely Whig and Maine Law. The ship is very much broken un. but the masts are fortunately still ! standing, enabling the passengers to cling to life. second DEPrATcn. One hundred and thirty passengers have been landed on the beach by means of the the life boats and those haviDg charge of them.
