for the sports of the chase, auJ i ll things
betokened a response too dorp for utter

previous to the above mentioned merry

three-wheeled carriage, up to the biowuf

A Plucky Sheriff.
T)n Friday last, Sheriff Ileffuinnger, ef
Chester county, proceeded to Iialtimore
wirb a requisition from Gov. I!ijrler, for
Sloane, the prize fighter, who had previ
ously been arrested in that city. They
traveled on the cars, and when they arrived
Ham de Grace, the prisoner asked to be
cnironed. Tbo Sheriff complied with bis
request, as tbe cars were going at a very
rapid rate. When about three miles this
aide of Chester, a " gentleman'' undoubt
edly an accomplice cut-tbe bell rope that
ran through the cars, stepped to the door
nd threw it open. Sloane evidently
knew the movement, for he sprang to the
door the instant it was opened. The She
riff sprang after him, bat a man sitting by
tliH door had uearly closed it before he
could reach it.
He, however, was on the platform in an
instaut, but only to see his prisoner spring
from the ears, while they were running at
the rate of from twenty-Gve to thirty miles
an hoar. He saw him strike tbe ground
and roll upon it like a ball. Iu an instant
the intrepid Sheriff f jllowed, striking up, n
bis face, and cutting his lip. Ho arose
nd found that bis upper lip was the only
wound in consequence. His prisoner bad
gathered himself up and started for a run,
evidently crippled by his fall. The Sheriff
followed aud gained on his culprit, calling
open biro to surrender, who feeing be was
about to be overtaken, turned and spared
himself for a fight. The Sheriff drew his
revolver and attempted to fire, but fortu
nately for the prisoner it missed, lie v. as
about to try another, when the pugilut
surrendered and begged for quarter.
Tbe Sheriff held the pistol to his breast
and told hiin to bold out his bands for the
irons, which he submissively did. After
securing him the Sheriff put his prisoner
before him and started towards ths city on
f)ot. At the next stopping place, the con
ductor, who had remained ignorant of what
had had happened, was informed of the
circumstances, and was persuaded to run
back, expecting to find the Sheriff and
prisoner both dead, or badly injured. In
stead of this, they were found on the rail,
tbe victor marching his prisouer before
hiin. They were taken on board and
brought to West Chester.
A young lady in a braruiog, house, very
vain of her musical talents, was one day
entertaining the company with a song,
when a crunty old bachelor came out of bis
room on the next floor, and bawled from
the top of the stair :
"What are you doing with that pig?
Do turn that pig into the street !"
" What pig?" cried several.
Tho bachelor descended the stairs, looked
into the room, and said" I thought 1
