set her deck in a blaze. At three o'clock
her foremast fell, knocking her mainyard
out of the slings, and shortly after the
mainmrst came down across the deck. Her
mizenniast followed, carrying with it the
spanker mast. The vessel was now a per
fect wreck, being one mass of flames abaft
the mainmast. From tho rapid manner
in which the flames were spreading it was
apparent that nothing could savo her. She
was still burning at half past three, and
by this time probably nothing remains of
that magnificent floating palace but a char
red and blackened hull.
From the Great Republic the fire spread
to the large ship Joseph Walker, over

defiance to all efforts to save her. She be
longed to the black star line, and may be
considered a total loss.
A large ship, supposek to be the packet
ship Do Witt Clinton or the clipper ship
Red Rover, lying next the Great Republic,
caught fire in the rigging, and soon become
a complete blaze. She was towed out in
front of the Catharine Market by one of
the Fulton ferry boats, and afterwards
floated up the river. She eventually burned
to the water's edge.
In addition to the above, several other

Sr A dangerous nest of counterfeiters
has just been broken up in the village of
Knoxville and Corning, in Steuben county,

named James Cutler, aud Susan his daugh
ter, G. B. Thompson, C. D. Jollie, Judson
Palmer, and a man named Cherry. The
operations were carried on in the house of
Cutler. He and his daughter Susan, a girl
of about eighteen years of age, and Judson
were taken to jail. It is believed that these
are only a portion of the gang.
We also notice that John Tarr, and a
colored man named Toney, from Muncy
Dam, in this county, were recently arrest
ed at Wellsboroug, Tioga county, on sus
picion of being engaged iu counterfeiting.
Several hundred dollars of counterfeit mo
ney was fouud in the possession of Toney,
and a small amount in the possession of
1 arr. i hey were committed to the Tioga

A Word about the "Chronicle."
Over 500 weeks has this journal now
been issued, and two weeks will conclude
its tixth year under its present administra
tion. About half of its 2C2 original pat
rons' names remain upon the subscription

Assuming tbat every paper we print has

larger than that of the most faithful prea
cher or the most eloquent lecturer, (but
thc salary considerably less.)
Since the Chronicle came into our hands,
we have clothed it in new type, at a cost

or 25 per cent. Tho number of workmen

raised in price generally but our terms
have not been advanced. Thus, while

premises is, that wi must raise our
rates of CHAROIS, or our vernier must
obtain an increase ef patronage. The
papers above us on the West Branch, and
some on the North Branch and elsewhere,
have raised their charges. We choose to
wait one year longer at the old rate s
trusting that we may be favored with such
an increase of Subscribers. Advertising,
and Job Work, as may enable us to keep
on at our old rates.
In almost every neighborhood, within
20 miles around Lewisburg, additional
patrons might readily be obtained.
We send out weekly 98 papers in tinyfe
urappen. To print, fold, envelope, and
direct singly; 52 times a year, affords but
a small profit indeed. If each oue now
getting a paper alone will get one or more
new subscribers to join him, the larger
packages will go more safoly, and afford
us better compensation.
One Dollar a Year Tico Centta Wak
(and no postage in Union county,) is all
the paper will cost to any old subscriber
who will obtain one or more new ones, and
send thc Cash for all ($1 each) in advance.
