through the different floors, crying and
screaming for assistance to save them from

Messrs. Harper & Brothers The entire i

four hundred thousand dollar, of which

The insurance on the whole amount is but
5200,000. With the exception of a policy
of f 20,000 in a foreign Insurance Company
nearly every oflice in this city has a risk of
63000. Their buildings fronting on Cliff
street contained a Lumber of mammoth
steam power presses, which were entirely
destroyed. The three other beautiful build

A NEW KEITBLIC
e
Lower California ! fJ
Extract from the leg book of a Panama
correspondent of the X.Y. Herald.
Sunday, Nov. 20. At C, P. M., saw a
bark bearing S. AV. of us, about eight
miles distant, carrying all sail, and endea
voring to cut us off and firing signal guns;
supposing her in distress I bore up for her;
she proved to be the bark Carolina, from
Cape St. Lucas ; she bore a flag consisting
of two red horizontal stripes with a white
stripe between, containing twogolden stars ;
she reported a new Republic had been pro
claimed in Lower California-; the Carolina
is the same vessel that left San Prancisco
in October, bent on a filibustering expedi
tion in Guayamas, numbering in all about
fifty men, commanded by Col. Walker ;
they Landed us a paper, in which they sta
ted tbey had taken the town of La 1'az ;
that they had on board, as prisoners, ex
Governor Espinosa, and the public docu
ments ; a few days after they took as pris
oners, Col. 1'cbolleio, who Lad been scut
by the Mexican Governor to supersede Es
pinosa; these with their own self-made
Governor, Walker, they had three Gover
nors of Lower California on board
the Carolina, and I should judge from
their number that their whole battalion, as
they term it, was on board the bark, and
had left St. Lucas to save their heads.
The vessel was apparently beating up the
coast, evidently bound to San liego, as
their document, Landed unsealed, was
directed to the editor of the San Diego
Herald ; gave them some morning papers,
and left them, only regretting that I had
not tho authority to take the vcs.;cl as a
prize, and instead of which I lost fifteen
miles from my day's run, in endeavoring,
as I supposed to relieve a vessel in dis
tress. Extensive Fire at Lo Roy.
The large Steam Planing Mill, belong
ing to C. L. Olmstead &. Co., took fire, it
is supposed from friction, on Monday night
at 6 o'clock, and burned to the ground.
A largo amount of lumber in the vard
' tdjoiuing was also destroyed. The engine
was saved. Loss estimated at from ? 12,
000 to ?18,000. No insurance. Several
persons were considerably injured, but no
lives were lost.
