The Ventriloquist's Coats.
Some years ago there was m young nwu
living in avauriab, by tue name of Nich
ols. Ho was a clerk in a large store. It
happened that a travelling ventriloquist
visited Savannah and to interested Nichols,
that he engaged with Liu to go around the
courvry together.
Id the course of time the young eclipsed
Lis roaster, lie displayed most astonish-
inc powers, and caused great excitement

It . after he became famous and

aitby, that he visited a tailor's shop iu
wea
Savannah, to order a new coat.
The
Knight of the shears was happy to receive
the order from so dist'uifruistd a customer,
and assured the veutriloqaint that the gar
ment should be an exact fit.
Now Nichols had a remarkable chest.
He could to inflate his lungs as to increase
circumference of his body clevcu inches.
A week passed and the Luni'irist waited
pou the tailor jucoinpauy with a friend,
to take the new coat. Upon j uttng it on,
it laeked about a foot of coming together !
The tailor was thunderstruck. There was
the measurement the figures his own.
How could he have made such a disgrace
ful blunder? With nurobeilwa apologies,
he begged to be allowed to measure ajain,
and make a second coat.
IVhen it was done, Nicholas come in
with his friend again tJ see ho-v it would
fit.
The tailor handed the garment to him,
remarking that there was u t mistake this
time he w.u'd find it a complete lit.
Would he ? He put it on, and lapped it
around him like a blanket ! It was as
much too large :.s the first was too small.
He tossed it off. The tailor ftiuk his
hand upon his head, and cried, 4 I am ou'
of my senses I" lie throw 1.5 sL.-.i
and book aeross the room, aud wi u'
to dash out of the shop, whi n Nich ail,
coolly. " Here let me try on the til st out
you made for me.
The tailor, amaied banded it to him.
It buttoned exactly over a geuteol wasit.
"And now, suppose I try on the large
coat again."
He did, and it was none too !arge to
button over his body, which swetllcd up
like an alderman's.
"I think," eaid Nichols, "I'll take both
of these coats," and he handed some bank
notes to the bewildered tailor, who after
his singular customer had departed, fiuaily
concluded that Le must have measured over
his enormous lung, inflated to their utmost,
for the second coat, and for the first one,
when his chest was contracted to its small
est tapacify. The tailor, at the las ac
counts, was telling the story to every new
cus timer.
Cuvier and Satan.
It was said no doubt correctly, that so
extraordinary was the skill of Cuvier, that
if he only saw the tooth of an animal, he
could give not only the class anJ order of
ih; animil in q-iestinu, but the hiitury of
its hibits. Ta ; f ill iwing anecdote of a
quick and c ol examination of a personage,
whom roost pr-opie would not think of sub
mitting to such a scientific research, is, to
use the Yankee vernacular, decidedly
"rA In the Gentletniirs Magaziue

the Trapists," and bearing the signal uie
of ''John Doran," concludes with a char
actcristic anecdote of Cuvier. He once
saw in his sleep ths popular representation
of Satan advancing towards him, and
threatening to est him. "Kat mc !" ex
