Tha result of this election is a "signal.
and, we, trust a final rebuke to all those
who wish
fish to introduce foreign and infidel :
changes into our moral, social and political !
system. Certainly the rebuke which has
been given in this election should silence
forever all further efforts. We do not
claim the election of Mr. Lackland as a
party triumph, in any political shape; and
we are pleased to have here the opportuui-
ty of saying that men of all parties the
most violent partisans of the Democrats,
as well as the Whigs united to give him
support, because of their cutagouism to
the views and purposes of this new for-

The N. X. Alias is rcsponsiaio w
followicg:
Mr. Burgees l.tid not long lecu at the
bur, before a little im-ide.it rendered nun
famous. The Janitor of the Court was a
Deacon William Gibbons, an old man,
very fond of snuff, tobaco, the fair sex, and
New ,.:ugIanJ ruI1 TLl8 Jau,tor deaeon
alays encased himself a black sat,..
smalls, silk vest, cauliflower wig, and bro-
gans decorated with very large diamond
buckles. He was one of those men of other

court anj jmg ; anJj lUmblc as bis office
wgg roearjL.j himself as one of the Su-
j ourt of ihode Island. The dea-
! . .
con took a fancy to Mr. Rurgcss ; and, be
tween the twain, a most decided friendship
and intimacy grew up. The deacon was
a willing scrn'tor to Mr. Burgess, and
adopted all possible ways and means to se
cure his undivided friendship. Thefecling
was reciprocal ; and a kind of a Damon and
Pythian friendship, in a small way, was
consummated.
At last, Deacon Gibbons found that a
new pair of small had become necessary.
lis made known the condition of bis ward
robe to Tristam Burgess, who in the gen
erosity of bis nature' loontd bim an old
pair of breeches. The deacon put them
on, aud entered couit with a stride that
partook of the magniloquent.
It so happened that on that very day,in
the midst of animated argument, Mr.,Rur
gess found it necessary to make a call on
the janitor deacon for a tumbler of cold
water. The Deacon, who happened to be
fast asleep when the call was made, was
rather slow in proceeding ; but finally
the "cup of colli water was produced.
Tristam took a hearty swig at it, and set
ting it down, looked the deacon in the eye,
whilst he uttered the rude expression, "old
scoundrel;" and then applied bis foot to
the janitor, in the face and eyes of court'
and jury. For this act of aggression, an
indictment was obtained at the bands ofihe
Grand Inquest of the county : and Tristam
Burgess w9 duly arraigned, charged with
assault aud batter'. He appeared in his
own defence, whilst the State was, with
due solemnity, represented by the Attor
ney General, Mr. Updike and the case
went to the jury. The defendant Burgess
the assault on the breeches : but denied
having assaulted the janitor Deacon. He
contended that thebreehes the deacon had
on belonged to bim, Bnrgpfs ; that they
were simply loaned ; and that every man
had an unqualified legal and natural right
to kick his own breeches, whereever he
might find them ! The Supreme Court of
Rhode Island sustained the plea ; and the
gentleman of the jury, after an absence of
two days and nights, returned a verdict of
not 'J ' Rhode Island jurisprudence,
at once took an enlightened and lofty po
sition in the history of criminal recogni
zance ; and Tristam Burgess at once be
:ea,ue a lion of first ngnudc.

by the New York Secretary of State, who
is also Superintendent of the Public Schools
on the right of school teachers in the pub
lic schools of that State, to compel students
to read and study the Protestaut Testa
ment. The question arose upon the com
plaint of the Rev. Dr. Quigloy, of Wash
ington county, whose child hah been chas
tised and expelled from school for refusing,
iu obedience te his parcut's command, to
commit parts of the Testatncut to memory.
The Secretary very properly held that the
State had no authority to compel the pu
pils to receive any sectarian instructions
against the wishes of their pareuts. He
also withdrew from the teacher complained
of her certificate of competency as a public
instructor.
The motion for a new trial, iu the case of

being no prosecutor or witnesses present,
the Major was promptly discharged by the
Court. Munei f.umiuan.
