On Wednesday Last, about 5 e'cloek, V. M. tbe weather-boarded log tenaut house on the farm of Hugh M' Wil liams, in Cl'ilifuariuc township, North umberland county, occirj-ied by Mr. James Eusscllr caught fire in the second story, mod speedily burnt to the ground. The family bad just set down to supper when the lire was discovered, but the wind being strong and the braiding old and very dry, they were unable to rescue anything what ever, except a bureau and a few other ar ticles on the first floor. Not a single arti cle of wearing apparel wa3 saved except what they bad on their persons, and all their bcd3, bedding, &c, were totally de stroyed. Mr. R. also lost all his most val uable papers, and bad bis bands badly burned. II u loss is about 700 no in-siirauce. every promise they have made. Only one vote was cast against the extension from Siuibury to Lewislurg, and that was from the other side of the River, where the Sun bury & Erie Road exerts its powers. What thill be the result f That depends upon ourselves. If we act intelligently and thoughtfully and manfully and VM TKDLr, so much the surer and more easy is our success. But if we indulge, at the instigation cf the emissaries and spies of the Sunlury & Eric interest, in unfound ed surmises in mysterious whisperings in jealousies iu fearful forebodings in magnifying errors in distorting facts in sowing discords then we may hinder the work, depreciate our own bonds, injure our own property, and do no good except ing to gratify the feelings of those, who are and who have always proved tbemschkjs our enemies. Dreadful Railroad Accident 1 Baltimore, March 28. A dreadful rail road accident took place on the Baltimore and Ohio . Railroad, last night, seventy miles west of Cumberland, by which eight lives were lost, and several persons serious ly wounded. : , - The train was going around a curve with a descending grade of 116 feet to the mile, when one of the rails gave way, andfhe two hindmost passenger ears were de tached, and precipitated down a ' sloping embankment more than 100 feet, rolling over four times on the way, and then dashed to pieces at the bottom. Daniel Holt, of the firm of Ilolt & Maltby, was killed. He was a well-known Baltimorean, engaged in shipping oysters to California and the Western States, by which he had accumulated a handseinc fortune. In the two cars which went over the precipice, there were seventy-four passen gers, only twelve ef whom were able to conie through to Baltimore on Monday the others, who were not killed, being too badly injured to be brought further than Cumberland. It appears that Mr. Ilolt was standing on the platiorm talking to Mr. Rawlings, the Conductor, at the time the accident occurred. Mr. R. leaped from the plat form and was saved, but Mr. Holt, being on the lower side, was precipitated down the embankment, alighting among the sharp rocks, and was terribly torn and mashed. He lived, however, about three hours, perfectly sensible, but during the last two hours suffered great bodily pain. II is mind, however, was calm, and he gave his money, about forty dollars, and his gold watch, to Mr. Rawlings, with many directions to those watching him about his position, so as to relieve or mitigate his sufferings if possible. lie was perfectly aware of his approaching end, and spoke of it with composure and without fear. The accident was wholly unavoidable. SECOND ARRIVAL OF Winttv ftooatt TOW on hand, enibracing a large and N : Lightning Rods. An immense Mass Meeting assembled in Market Square last night, in this city, to nominate an Independent Ticket for city officers to sus tain the Common Schools, and oppose the demands of the Roman Catholics, in regard to a division of the School Fund. All political and party lines were entirely laid aside and candidates were selected with a single view to the school question. Many Germans, both Romanists and Jews, par ticipated, and pledged themselves to be in favor of the people tyillnje. Great indig nation was expressed at the attempts of foreign ecclesiastics to interfere with the Common School System. The Division ofHalifornia into Three States, distinct and separate, is now con templated and pressed there. A majority of the Legislature, it is said, will ordur a State Convention, and upon that Conven tion, will depend the mode, manner, and boundaries of division. The three States are to be named "Sierra," the mountain division which has about 23,000 inhabi tant, by the last census: "California," which has 207,388; and "Tulare, the southern State, including Los Aneelos and San Diego, which has 34,150 inhabi tants, and about seven and a half millions of taxable property. The southern State of Tulare, in the division, it is contempla ted by many of the occupants to make a slave State of, and one of the objects of pressing the division is to establish slavery there.
