The following excellent letter from General
Pierce appears in the Washington Republic,
having been furnished for publication to that
Journal by the person to whom it is addressed.
We need hardiy call the attention of our
readers to the conclusive terms of the letter,
or to the entire frankness of its whole tone
and character :
Cuhcohd. (X. II..) July 53, 1832.
Mr niiftsm Surrounded by pressing en
gagements, I seize the earliest opportunity to
reply to your letirr of the 17ih iusiani. I much
regret that anything connected with myself
should have b.'en the cause of dia;reeincnt
between you and gentleman wiih whom you
have been associated in the editorial depart
ment of the Southern Press. 1 do not remem
ber ever to have seen what purports to be a
report of a speech delivered by rue at Xew
Boston, in this state, in January last, until my
; attention was culled to it as republished in the
tv puoiic. i tie pretended report is, and I pre
sume was designed to be, an entire misrepre
sentation. It is not merely untruthful, but it
is so grossly and absurdedly false as to render,
in this viciti'y, any denial of its authenticity
entirely unnecessary. The two papers quo
ted the Independent Democrat, published in
this place, and the Democrat pub!ilied in
Manchester are thoroughly abolition jour
nals; and have been, and are, zealously op
posed to the Democratic party. For a long
lime prior to the meeting at Xew Boston, and
ever since, they have been unsparing in thtir
attacks upon me personally, and in their bitter
ueuuncidiion ol wh it they have been pleased
to term my pro-slavery sentiments.
But it ;
would be something new for e ther of these
papi-rs to deny die consistency of my opinions
upou the constitutional rights ol the Si.uth in
relation to slavery. My opinions, and the
avowal of them, have been everywhere the
same. Ever mindful of the dilliculties and

it will be given her. It is not in the nature of
