A writer in the lat Farm Journal, iu Mifflin county, who signs with the initials J. W., offers the following as to his experience of the Talue of plowiug in Clover for Wheat. It is worthy the attention of the general farmer. - Id the summer of 1849, I had a small field of 4 i acres in clover, which I pas tured a whilf, and then let the clover grow rtntil it was fit. to ent for seed. With a large plow and threa strong hwes, I plowod it, then harrowed it effectually, and let it lie uutil 8th of September, when I e.-p 'd it. In the harvest of 1350, 1 cut 135 dozen of a beat, which yielded ' 1G5 buBbels or 3GJ bushels per acre. It did Dot require to ! seeded with clover the next season. I plowed it down last season gain, and the wheat, now looks, al though a part was winter-killed. It is proper to state that the crop of wheat now looks fine, although a part was winter killed. It is proper to state that the crop of wheat that was on it before the clover plowed down, did not exceed ten bushels per acre. A Fact about Cast Steel. Being in the machica shop of S. Een jamin & Co, of Winthrop, one of tie firm, J. M. Berjjmiu, observed that he Lad been iiifjimed of a fact in regard to the working of cast steel which was not generally known, and which he thought weuld be uerfuL When cast rtcel has been over heated its texture is changed it becomes more erystaline, and apparently coareet and is supposed to be ?p i!t. Various experi ments have been tried to restore it to its original condition. In some of the books on working metals, it is recommended to repeatedly h".t and cnol it, giving less and less heats ur.il it is restored. The simple remedy is when over-heated, to lay it by and cool gradually. For the purpo33 of testing this proeess, a piece of cast steel was heated until a portion of its enJ was actually burnt off. After it was cooled, a piece was broken off and its texture examined and com pared with a fracture in the other end of the same bar the heated end exhibited coarse, cryttaline, granular appearance spoken of. It was then heated and drawn nt undar hammer, when it was found re stored nearly to Itt oiijinal texture, and broke as short, witb as fine a fracture, as if it had never been over-heated. Miiae Farmer. Cash bad fob Istksti ve Faculties. The Family Visitor states that the pos session of cash has a sort of anodyne effect npsn the inventive faculties. During the time that the Patent Office has been in operation, it is said that only five labor saving machines have been invented by men of wealth. Of these five, one of them is devoted to a " new mode of smo king tobacco," and the other four to " easy chain." This proves true" the old adage, n;cessiy is the mother of invention.' f or a large portion of the new inventions were either directly or indirectly caused ty necessity. Changs or Fohtcke. Some years agt, a servant girl, who had robbed her mistress, a milliner iu London, was trans ported to Syduey for a term of years. Since the discovery of Bathurst plaius, the female couvict has written to her farmer mistress, that the colony was a good place ; that she now kept her carriage, she was happy to return the amount which she had stolen, with interest ; that ahe earnestly recommended her to come out and set up shop; and that, in that case, sue should be happy to extend her patronage to a lady for whom she had so great an esteem. Bister's Office Holders Gov. Bigler signed the bill giving the Commissioners of Union County power to guarantee stock in the Susquehanna Rail road. Not a remonstrance against thin bill came in daring the six weeks it lay before the Democratic Legislature that passed it. Leading men of the county (Democrats and Whigs) and all the pa pers urged jhe Commissioners to take stock and they have. Forthwith, a howl of detraction and the blackest falsehoods are heard in denunciation of the deed. Gov. Bigler's aiii-tle-ramp, Lt. Col. Rol.t B. Barber, heads a Repudiation meeting, which is drummed up and infpt'ritetl by Charles Sbiincr, Gov. Bigler's Whiskey Inspectoral I'hiladolphia, and John Cum mingi, wl.o holds a State office at Colum bia. Both these men, instead of attending to their legitimate, and sworn duties, spend their time influencing the local politics of a county distant from their official home, and stirring up sedition, tumult and alarm among an honest awl peaceful people ! We think Gov. Bigler g:tins himself no credit, and his true friends no good, by this conduct of his office-holders. And if it be continued, the inference will be strong that it has all been a contrived plan to make a little paltry political capital in this county, at the expense of its substantial interests as a portion of the State. It is a little singular, moreover, that men in this region Democrats all their lives liko Uenbt W. Fhieb, Sah'l. S. Barton, and IIsnry S. Gboss, are pushed aside as vnjit to hold office, while Charlet Shriner and Jo!in Cammingt are preferred as leeipieots of Executive patro nage 111 . " ' - But Gov.
