To the Editor of the Virginia Herald.
Sia,—AS the time of harvest is approach
ing, I address, through your paper,.nly bro
_ ther fariners,, on the importance of allowing
wheat 'intended for sowing, to be entirely
---ripa-befere 'reaping. Accident last year,
and eye-sight this year, have convinced me
of the propriety of this course.
In the year 1829, having" selected by hand
some ears of Mexican wheat, and sowed it
in the fall .of the same year, it was forgotten
testi...year, until my little son reminded me
that it ought to be gathered. o It was then
from seven to ten days after my other wheat
. of the same kind had been cut.—This *heat
was then gathered and deposited .in a bag.
Last October, this wheat was seeded on the
same day, in.the same manner and adjoining
- to other Mexican wheat.. No selection of
land was made for it, as no experiment was
• intended. 'lt has survived the fly, and the
lust severe winter with little injury, but not
more than one third of the adjoining wheat
has been left alive. From itsj present ap
.. pearance, it will produce, I belicve, two thirds
more than its- . adjacent neighbor.
Can the keeping in the bag, be the cause
of. this superiority( I .believe riot, because
in several previous years, said wheat has
beeb.kept by me in bags, and no similar re-
sol; has taken plaae; my inference," is, that
---dundifference must be owing to the 'entire
•
a~tpenese seed. Should auy reader of
this-eeminunication have doubts on this sub
ject, it would give me great pleasure to
shew them the growing wheat which will
convince, I should think, the most sceptical.
From my twenty-four years experience
as a farmer I am always satisfied, that the
smut is mainly attributed to unripe wheat.
My seed wheat, has - been always riper than
that of my neightiers, and during that period
. - I - htme never seen but six smutted heads - in
my own crops. In a conversation with the
late. Mr. Isaac Williams, he confirmed my
sa mg ome io same prac tee
of-one of his nearest neighbors, attended by
the most entire success.
In making this communication, the inte
rest of wheat-growers is my sole object, and
" ; by it, their corps should be increased, it
will contribute to the happiness of your obe
dient servant,
THE WHEAT CROP.
The. Richmond Compiler of the 30th ult.
Observes: "Our :accounts from the neigh
bouring country, on the river, both above
and below us are unfavorable to the crop..
Wb have heard of a farm in this county,
below this city which was expected to pre;
duce 3000 bushels, and will yield only per
haps, about 1500. We have heard of five
farrhs still lower, on which the wheat has
been ploughed up—in order to set in oats
or corn. One of the best farmers on the
lower Jaines River, writes that he has nev
er heard of such general devastation com
mitted by the vilkuuous fly.

ble-account of tho appearance of the wheat

uidlivorablo to the crops. It appears that
the fly, during the cold and dry .weather in
the early part of the last •inotith, has
made great ravages;-Mid ruined many fields
of the early sawed wheat beyond recovery.
The ravages ofthe Hessian Fly have been
so great that many persons have turned their
stock into their wheat fields; while others
have ploughed their tields, and planted them
in corn.--4?alei , th N. C. 11Tay 44 t
