No. MINOR NOTES ON THE DANTE CELEERATION Houghton Miftlin Company has undertaken to publish a special Centenary edition of Norton's translation of the Divine Comedy in one volume at the request of the Xational Dante Committee. Dr. Norton's translation is gener ally accepted as the best for the English reader- At the request of the Xational Dante Committee. Dr. John T. Siattery is preparing a Dante Pri mer. which will give in small com pass and at <>low price, the essen tial Facts with regard to Dante's J :'e a:id times, his works and his place in literature. The book will be -ready for distribution in about a month. The Committee has been en-, trusted with the duty t*f distri buting the official Dante medal in the United States. The medal will be awarded by the National Dan te Committee in recognition of dis tinguished services in connection with the Dante celebration, just * i as it will be awarded in Italy by the Casa l)i Dante in Rome. Professor Ernest H. Wilkins, of the University of Chicago, will give two courses on Dante at the Columbia Summer School, one in Italian for advanced students and one in English for undergradu ates. The Dante Memorial Associa tion, under the chairmanship of Dr. John T. Slattery, is raising a fund to be used in restoring the j ancient Church of San Francesco in Ravenna, in which the body of ; Dante was first interred. The ChieaJfr Literary Club op j ened its year on the evening of I January 3rd with a Dante me monal meeting in which Dr. Koch ! Professor MeKenzie and Profes isor Wiljrins took part. Dr. A- J. Armstrong, head of , the English Department of Bay ! lor University, litis been selected to represent the Italian Commu nity of Waco, Texas, in placing a permanent memorial wreath on the tomb of Dante at Ravenna. The League of America |will hold free Italian and English study classes on Dante through out the winter at the National Arts Club, New York City. The English Department of Baylor University is gathering to gether all poems in English that have been addressed to Dante or | inspired by his work. The Dante celebration at Aar -1 T- • vard I niversity will be held on ; October 17th. The principal ora tion will be delivered bv Profes sor Charles H. Grandgent. A prize of $lOO is being offered by the Italian Intercollegiate As sociation for the best essay on Dante submitted by a studeut in a college or university in Xew York City. The Association has also announced a similar contest for students in high schools and preparatory schools in Xew York City, with a first prize of &~>o. a second prize of $3O. and a third prize of *2O. The National Dante Committee will award the Official Dante Medal to the winner of the $lOO prize. Professor Grandgent. delivered a course of six lectures and a pub lic discourse on Dante at the Uni versity of Xortli Carolina during the week of February 7th.
