——— J She Knew How to Do It.
Little Alice, coming home from
school, said: "Oh! mother, I've
learned to punctuate." "Well, dear,
how Is It done?" asked her mother.
"Why, when you write 'Hark!' you
put a hatpin after It and when you
ask a question you put a button hook
after It," she answered.
Flowers Owe Life to Insects.
In California are several sorts of
flowers that would bear no seeds ex
cept for the visits and activities of In
sects. One of these is the yucca. A
tiny moth lives in the flower and per
forms a peculiar work, intricate, but
without which the yucca could not per
petuate itself through seeds.
In Danger.
A few days ago a five-year-old boy
came with his mother to visit the let
ter's cousin. The first night, upon re
tiring, they were given a room which
contained a folding bed. which was
something new to the young man. Hej
watched the process of opening, then
got into bed, lay there, and thouerhr for
a few minutes, then looked u. and 1
said: "Mother, we will have to look
out, for this bed has a self-starter,
and Is liable to go up on us."
Art of Love Becomes Art of War.
We have heard during this war a
great deal of camouflage —the art of
i making things seem what they are not.
But it is nothing new. The fair sex
have been practicing the art for many,
many centuries, and a little paint, a
sprinkling of powder, a tuft of hair
and a few ruffles will mislead a male
observer just as easily today as wfFen
Mother Eve pulled the first leaf off
the fig tree.

tion on an automobile when Its owner

No Time for Debate.
"Jlbbes Is the kind of fellow who
never makes a move without first ask
ing himself whether or not It will be
good for his health." "I saw him Jump
six feet in the air yesterday to dodge
an automobile. Instinct probably told
him what was good for his health,
without his stopping to debate the mat
ter."

The Workers' Intellectual Life.
We make this suggestion to any em
ployer in any large establishment:
Find out what your employees read,
what newspapers and magazines they
take regularly, what books they call
f<-r in the public library, what lectures
they to, or would go to if they had
he opportunity. Make a similar study
« " the reading matter and favorite dl
ersions and mental pastimes of the
men immediately in charge. —Indus-

Taking All the Smell.
Dolly and Dick had saved their pen
nies and bought their mother a bou
quet. In carrying it home Dolly kept
smelling it constantly till finally Dick
said: "There won't be no smell left for
mama when we gets it home."
Why the Weather Bureau?
Why the weather bureau? This
question Is likely to be asked, In more
or less querulous tones, whenever the
local weather prediction fails, as It
; often does, says the Popular Science
Monthly. The inquirer overlooks the
fact that the weather bureau has much
more important things to foretell than
ordinary changes of weather. It pre
dicts with certainty great windstorms,
destructive floods, severe freezes and
other atmospheric visitations that en
danger life and property on a large
scale and collects climatic statistics for
scientific agriculture.
