This is called the problem of "orientation." Dr. Lashley used the wild birds of the Florida keys known as noddy and sooty terns in ex periments. In their recognition of their nests it was found that their eyes as well as their muscles are concerned. The birds showed uo evidence of any special sense of locality, such as a "magnetic sense" or a "second sight." Birds are no more mind readers than men are. Nor do they have any ability to retrace their paths of flight by memory. Lots were drawn for the honor of handling the halyards, and fell to Molly Malone and Mignon Anderson, two of the prettiest players in the company. One of the orchestras, which was playing for a dramatic pro duction, was requisitioned to lead the "Star Spangled Banner," and the great group of players clustered about the base of the tall pole joined in singing the national anthem, as the red and white stripes, with the starred blue field, rose for the first time into the sunshine. Ella Hall, the little Bluebird stnr, plays with her mother, who looks like her double, in her pew Bluebird pic ture. Harry Carey, Universal's famous player of western roles, is a licensed skipper, having sailed boats all his life. Claire McDowell, star of the Red Feather, "The Bronze Bride," is a grandniece of Sim Reeves, the famous English tenor. Myrtle Gonzalez, the Bluebird lead ing lady, had to learn to walk on snow shoes for her latest Bluebird picture, directed by Lynn Reynolds and cajled "The Code of the Ivlondyke." Herbert Rawlinson, Universal star, is one of the few leading men on the screen who have no ambition to direct as well. William Franey, leading comedian of the Universal Jokers, disguises him self so completely on the screen that he has never been recognized, even in Los Angeles. _ Phi] Dunham is making a fire pic ture, upon which he and Vin Moore are concentrating their efforts as co directors. She has a leading role —that of Tea Rose —in the Red Feather, "The Flower of Doom," which is the most Important role she has ever had. Dorothy Phillips plays the dual role of two sisters in her next Bluebird picture, "The Girl in the Checkered Coat." Eddie Polo performs a sensational fall from a cliff in the Red Feather picture "The Bronze Bride," starring Claire McDowell. Tina Marshall, playing the lead in "The Magpie," a Universal Special in three reels, is a Daughter of the American Revolution. A son has just been born to the brother of Eddie Lyons of the Nestor comedies, who plays under the name of Harry Nolan. Ruth Stonehouse, the author-ac tress-director of Universal City, is filming a three-reel picture from a story by Meredith Nicholson.
