The Daily Collegian Sophomores try to prove abilities in competition By Dan Norton FOR THE COLLEGIAN Penn State’s men’s gymnastics team is built on youth this year, but that doesn’t mean it lacks experience. Last season, coach Randy Jepson brought in one of the largest freshman classes in recent memory. Eight gymnasts competed at the collegiate level for the first time, often negatively impacting Penn State on the score sheet. “Last year we kind of crumbled as soon as one person started to fall apart,” senior captain Matt Albrecht said. In 2010, the Nittany Lions underachieved by their usual high standards, posting a 2-5 record in meets against one opponent. Three of their losses came to prominent Big Ten rivals Ohio State, Illinois and Michigan. Flirthermore, they placed third in the Big Ten championships and fourth in the NCAA qualifiers, failing to qualify for Nationals as a team for the second consec utive year. But despite its mediocre season, Penn State had a lot to look forward to, with three Collgqian Classifieds" Number ' of words 12 3 4 issue issues issues issues issues $6.50 59.50 $12.50 $l5 50 51X.50 S 3 00 X.OO 12.15 1630 20 45 24 60 415 9.50 14.80 20.10 25.40 30.70 5.30 11.00 17.45 23 90 30 '5 30 SO ('45 12.50 20.10 27.70 35.30 42.90 760 Kat-h add’l 5 words add 1.50 2.65 lollegian Inc. reserves the right to reject, reclassify or revise any ad to conform to established policies. Fbr freshmen entering NCAA training and competition fbr the first time, they must adapt to a completely different approach in training and competition, Albrecht said. Many high schools do not fund a gymnas tics program, so up until graduation, gym nastics is an individual sport. Gymnasts compete in the junior national program for themselves. “College gymnastics is a whole different game,” Albrecht said. "You're doing it for the team.” So while Penn State’s freshmen compet ed and adapted, other schools favored upperclassmen in their lineups, boding well for the Nittany Lions in the future. And that future may be as soon as this upcoming season. Jepson holds high expectations for his sophomores in 2010-11, knowing full well their performance could make or break the Nittany Lions' season. “This year, they’re thrown into the fire,” he said. “They've made big improvements, 5 Kach add'l issue XU 6 lit 115 FOR SALE LAB PUPS YELLOW. He had team-highs in the pommel horse, the parallel bars, and the all-around. Sophomore Tony Beck followed Aronovich closely in the pommel horse, posting the team’s third best score. Beck has spent a lot of time on the horse during practice, seeking to improve upon the team’s numbers from last season. “A lot of people didn’t have a lot of confi dence [on the horse] last year,” he said. “A lot of guys are really stepping up and show ing they are ready to go this year.” Beck added his elbow is bothering him, but he’s hitting his routines in practice and is ready to go. Including Aronovich and Beck, all eight of last year’s freshmen are set to return this season with 12 events already under their belts. Jepson is looking for them to be big contributors this season with only five juniors and seniors on the roster compared to 16 freshmen and sophomores.
