Without a goal in his previous
four games, the junior striker on
the Penn State men’s soccer team
broke his slump with a two-goal,
one-assist effort in the 3-1 win over
Northwestern Thursday night at
Jeffrey Field. His performance,
which gives the striker 17 goals on
the year, helped lift the Nittany
Lions to a win in the first round of
the Big Ten Tournament and set

the net. The junior took one touch
and buried the ball before racing
over to the student section and

After tying the game, the Lions
scored two more times in the next
15 minutes, capped off by
Hertzog’s second effort.
Freshman forward Jordan
Tyler stole the ball deep in
Northwestern’s end and passed it
to Hertzog on the right side.
Dribbling in, Hertzog ripped a
shot from just outside the box that
Wildcats goalkeeper Drew Kotler
had no chance to save.
Just as the second half started,
Smallwood gave Hertzog a few
choice words to get going.
“I told him, ‘You haven’t scored
in four games, so let’s go,’ ”
