THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Students gather to discuss spirituality and sexuality in the Memorial Lounge in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on Thursday afternoon as part of National Coming Out Week. Students discuss religion, sexuality By Alaina Gallagher COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER Despite their different Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran and Methodist faiths, Penn State students came together Thursday after noon to discuss the impact religion has had on their lives as members of the LGBTQA community. Part of the university's National Coming Out Week celebration, the five student panelists gathered for the "Is Faith Straight?" talk at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center to share their perspectives on faith and sexuality with other students. Panelists revealed both their positive and negative experiences with their faith by sharing their spiritual journeys, family backgrounds and the processes they went through in coming out. One panelist described the pride she felt for her Jewish faith and its acceptance of homosexuality, while another panelist said his relationship with his Catholic faith has been damaged because of the Catholic church's outlook. While some panelists found acceptance and support from their faith, others had more troubling experiences that have left them uncertain. As friends of one of the panelists, Yosifa Greenberg and Zach Moore said they came to the talk to support not only their friend they came to show their support as allies. Fraternities to unite, walk for philanthropy By Alyssa Sweeney COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER When Marenah Dobin walks this week end in the Easter Seals fundraiser walk for disabled individuals, she'll be walking for her brother. "My brother has special needs, and I can definitely say this kind of thing really makes a difference," Dobin (sophomore bussiness administration) said. "Every lit tle bit counts, and getting to interact with them is just as awesome." Five fraternities teamed up to sponsor the second annual "Walk With Me" Saturday morning to raise money for Easter Seals, an organization that helps individuals with disabilities and special needs. Students from the State College Easter Seals Inclusive Child Development Center will walk with participants and four busi ness fraternities. Walk organizer Lisa Drobka said more than 100 people will line up at Beta Theta Pi, 220 N. Burrowes Rd., at 10:30 a.m. to walk 2.5 miles around campus. Through fundraisers, more than $4,000 has been raised for Easter Seals. "We've been raising money since sum mer, but it takes on a whole different mean ing when you actually get to meet the kids," said Will Sheehan, Beta Theta Pi `ldols' to grace stage at this year's THON By Megan Rogers COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER The first time Mike Fitzpatrick looked out from the THON stage, he was stunned. "It's one of the coolest views. It's pretty awe-inspiring," said Fitzpatrick, the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon entertainment overall chair man. "When you look out, it's a sea of color." This year, winners of the first ever THON Idol will get a chance to have the same experience. Fitzpatrick (senior-agribusiness-man agement) said this is the first time individ uals have been offered the chance to per form at THON. Typically, student groups, bands and dance teams make up the per formance roster not solo performances, he said. But through the new event, three students will win the opportunity to enter tain the crowd. He said staring out from the THON stage is a sight that's hard to put into words. "It was a little bit of shock. Just to see that many people in one venue was pretty awesome," Fitzpatrick said. just think it's a really good thing for the Penn State community to have a multi faceted support network for the LGBT community, - Moore (junior-geography) said. Greenberg (senior-psychology) and Moore said they were glad they got to see another side of their friend, since they don't usually discuss politics or religion together. "It was really great to come and support him and hear everyone's stories," said Greenberg. just thought it was a really great program and I would definitely come to another one." Panelist Alex Thorns (senior-biobehav ioral health) said he hopes students realize "that everybody fights with spirituality and sexuality and they can both be integrated into your life and that there are support groups that can help you express your identity" Brian Patchcoski, assistant director of the LGBTQA Student Resource Center, said the talks could help students embrace all the different aspects of their identity without sacrificing one for another. think it's so important for individuals who identify as LGBT to recognize there are resources for them to explore their spiritual and religious identity they don't need to be polar opposites," Patchcoski said. "Putting faces to the project, getting to hang out with them then it means so much more." Sheehan (junior-civil engineering) said that when the fraternity partnered with the organization officially as its main phi lanthropy, the kids came to a Beta Theta Pi chapter meeting to make a presentation. "It was so awesome. They were telling us what our help meant to them," he said. - A few of us even teared up a little bit." Drobka said she is excited students are involved with the Easter Seals children. "They've come in and done homework with our kids, and a few business fraterni ties even had family parties for them," she said. "It's really valuable, and it's not just Saturday but what they've been doing all year" To email reporter: arss474@psu.edu THON Idol was created as an attempt to increase the crowd's involvement at THON weekend, Special Events Overall Chairwoman Mary Dowd said. There are so many community mem bers who show their support for THON that the Overall Committee wants to reward the crowd and up their involve ment during the actual weekend, Dowd (senior-journalism) said. "We really want to try to get the crowd more involved THON weekend," she said. "We want to dedicate time to the people standing in the stands so long." Applications to audition for the event are due today at 5 p.m., Public Relations Overall Chairwoman Jony Rommel said. The top five contestants will perform at the 100 Days THON celebration on Nov. 10, she said.
