BEAVER CANYON Plan draws outcry By Colleen Boyle COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER A plan to potentially re-zone Beaver Canyon to include more student housing was met with opposition from some State College residents Wednesday afternoon including Penn State administrator Damon Sims. Most of the community mem bers who attended the meeting spoke out against plans to place more student housing in that section of the Highlands neigh borhood at 254 E. Beaver Ave, where downtown businesses like Canyon Pizza are located. On Oct. 14, the council will vote on a motion suggesting the property be designated as a res idential office. This would include an overlay and the con struction of nine additional feet of height to the building. Additionally, certain restric tions would be placed on first floor parking and residential space would not be permitted on that floor. The proposal leaves open the possibility of more student hous ing downtown, creating a situa tion many community members said they oppose. Vice President for Student Affairs Damon Sims attended the meeting and said he spoke as a State College resident not on behalf of the university. He opposed the proposal, citing past incidents, like the Ohio State riot that occurred in Beaver Canyon in 2008, as poten tial threats to the neighborhood.
