Lion Ambassadors walked
backwards in time Sunday as
they introduced historic charac
ters from Penn State to touring
students and families.
The walking tour was a high
light of Penn State's annual
Parents and Families Weekend,
which featured presentations,
open houses and tours for stu
dents and parents from Friday
through Sunday.
Every fall, students' families
arrive at University Park to
sample life at Penn State.
Events hosted by organiza
tions like the Penn State Alumni
Association and the
,Blue and
White Society included several
tours, a family barbecue and a
President's Open House, where
visitors could meet Penn State
President Graham Spanier.
Zachary Virgin (freshman

great for both students and par
ents.
"It gave students' families an
opportunity to experience the
school and spend time with
their kids in their college lives,"
he said.
Sarah Monroe (sophomore
kinesiology) said she didn't par
ticipate in the events last year,
but the weekend is a good way
for freshmen and their parents
to get oriented with the campus.
"I think it's good to have
organized events. We never
have any good ideas of what to
do when my parents visit,"
Monroe said.
Eileen Minto, Class of 1978,
said Parents and Families
Weekend was not as prominent
when she was in school.
She didn't participate as a
student, but said she appreci
ates the concept now as a moth
er.
"From a parent's point of
view, it's nice to see your kid in
the environment that they're
living in," she said.
"Its a good excuse to visit and
get to see their new friends and
dorm, and the events lined up
all weekend make sure you
always have something to do as
a family."
Since the campus is so large,
it's important to have programs

those who choose to register in

Generally, the student popula

"So far, the amount has been
typical for any group of students
registering here," she said. "It's
nothing like a presidential elec

HOMECOMING 2010
Spirit
week
starts
By Megan Rogers
COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER
For Homecoming Public
Relations Director Caitlin Rush,
the best part about Penn State is
that while everyone at the uni
versity has a different story, they
all share the same blue and
white pride.
That's the idea behind this
year's Homecoming theme:
"Bonded By Blue and White."
Homecoming Week has
arrived and those involved
with the preparations say the
anticipation and excitement are
high.
The week encompasses a vari
ety of activities from Tuesday
night's reorganized talent show
to the traditional Homecoming
parade Friday designed to
entice everyone at Penn State,
Rush (junior-marketing and pub
lic relations) said.
"Homecoming Week is a
chance for all students to exem
plify the pride and love they have
for Penn State," Rush (junior
marketing and public relations)
said.
With that in mind, the
Homecoming Executive
Committee has been preparing
for this week since last year's
Homecoming celebration, Rush
said. Penn State's Homecoming
is one of the largest in the coun
try she added.
But it's not just the Executive
Committee who's gearing up for
Homecoming weekend.
Float preparations for the
Homecoming parade begin
today, Interfraternity Council
Associate Vice President for
Homecoming Carter Satterfield
said and he expects to see fra
ternities and the organizations
they are paired with hard at
work on their floats throughout
the week
It's not just the parade that
students are excited for, he said.
Satterfield (senior-energy busi
ness and finance) said he thinks
overall participation in all
Homecoming events will be at
an all-time high this year
"We're just excited to see
Penn State come back from a
student point of view and
become a Penn State tradition,"
he said.
The alumni association is
preparing for the weekend as
well. Kate Delano, associate
director of strategic communica
tions for the Penn State Alumni
Association, said that while
there is no way to put a number
on the amount of alumni visiting
State College this week, many
returning students are expected.
The student-alumni ice cream
social will take place at the Hintz
Family Alumni Center from 1:30
to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, featuring
special guests like Grand
Marshal Alison Bayer, the
Nittany Lion, the Blue Band,
cheerleaders and distinguished
alumni, Delano said.
