‘Gasland’
director
to speak
after film
By Lauren Ingeno

Drilling into Marcellus Shale,
one of the largest gas fields in the
world, can provide many benefits
including a big boost to
Pennsylvania’s economy, accord
ing to recent Penn State
research.
But a documentary playing at
the State Theatre, 130 W. College
Ave., this weekend will show the
darker side of gas drilling.
Director Josh Fox will speak
about his findings after his docu
mentary’s showings at 1,4, 7 and
9:30 pm Sunday.
Fox’s documentary “Gasland”
has sparked controversy since
debuting on HBO June 21 and
winning a special jury prize at
the Sundance Film Festival.
Kristy Cyone, marketing direc
tor of the State Theatre, said
many people asked the theater to
play the documentary, which also
aired on WPSU-TV and is only
playing in select theaters around
the nation.
The film follows Fox as he trav
els through different areas of the
U.S., visiting communities
impacted by natural gas drilling
specifically by a method
known as hydraulic fracturing or
“fracking.”
Fox began his filming journey
after he was asked to lease his

different states, he said.
“When I started to explore the
process and ended up going to
different states, I found people
who were able to set their water
on fire from the drilling,” Fox
said. “I found people who were
getting very sick, rapid air pollu

in people’s water supply.”
Fox said his motivation for
making the film was to tell “the
whole story” and not the story
that was being told from the
gas industry, by speaking to
those directly affected by the
drilling.

He disagrees with Fox’s claims

said.
“Penn State is trying to be

Irving’s to showcase
student’s EP debut
By Allegro O’Neill
COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER
Proving what happens when
you follow your dreams, student
Anna Jepson is bringing her
debut EP to downtown State
College.
Jepson (senior-integrative
arts) will introduce her EP
“Something About Sunshine” to
the general public at 6 tonight
at Irving’s, 110 E. College Ave.
“She is performing down
stairs and food from the restau
rant will still be served upstairs
for customers,” said Marya
Schoenholtz, part owner of
Irving’s.
Jepson said she is happy
about the release party’ venue
because of its atmosphere.
“I thought Irving’s would be a
good go to because it is very
relaxed,” Jepson said.
For her, music has become a
full-time job.
“I realized that if I wanted to
really do this, I had to take it
seriously,” Jepson said. “So I
learned guitar and started writ
ing my own songs.”
It took about a year and a half
to get the songs written before
she could begin putting an EP
together, Jepson said.
“Once I got all the songs
together, I contacted a guy in
Nashville named Chris August
to produce it,” she said. “I wrote
all the songs and lyrics and
melodies and he added bass,
drums and guitar.”
Jepson said she liked the
freedom of being able to control
her first project.

Jepson said. “It was really fun
working with him because it
was really casual and since I
am completely independent it
was nice to have that control.”
Jepson said her musical style
fits in the genre of acoustic pop.
“Anything acoustic is my
music of choice,” Jepson said.
“Somebodjy told me it is a com
bination between Colbie Caillat
and Taylor Swift.”
Ann Hibbert (junior-market

that straddles a variety of gen
res.
“You don’t want too much of
one thing,” Hibbert said. “I like
all kinds of music so it’s good
that she’s changing things up.”
Other students said they’re
impressed with Jepson’s EP
release.
“I have a hard enough time
juggling classes, work and
activities,” Evangeline Worsley
(junior-secondary education)
said.
“It must take a lot of dedica
