Folk rock

downtown
By Cayla Rasi
FOR THE COLLEGIAN
British folk rock legend Richard
Thompson was scheduled to perform
at the State Theatre last April, but a
scorpion sting kept him from playing
his guitar.
While traveling through Mexico last
year, Thompson’s finger was stung by
a scorpion and the musician could not
play for three weeks, resulting in the
cancellation of six shows, including
the State Theatre show, Tim Bemett,
Thompson’s manager, said.
Tonight, however, Thompson wifi be
performing injury-free. Tickets are
still available and prices range from
$2O to $4O.
Bemett said Thompson’s style of
music crosses many boundaries.
“His music starts with British folk
rock but incorporates folk to Celtic to
modem,” Bemett said.
Anyone who purchased tickets for
last April’s show can use their tickets
for admission tonight, said Kristy
Cyone, State Theatre marketing
director.
“I have been looking forward to this
event since January or December
when we booked the event,” Mike
Negra, State Theatre executive direc
tor, said. “He’s a musician’s musician.
It’ll be an amazing show.”

Richard Thompson, voted a top 20 guitarist by Rolling Stone, canceled a local
show last year because a scorpion stung his finger and he was unable to play.
According to the State Theatre’s
Web site, Thompson’s work has been
admired and recorded by artists such
as Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne and
Elvis Costello.
“He is one of the top 20 guitarists
voted by Rolling Stone Magazine,”
Negra said. “And unless someone
introduces you to him and his music,
then you’ll never hear of him.”
Elaine Meder-Wilgus, a fan of
Thompson’s and owner of Webster’s
Bookstore Cafe, said she was dis
heartened after April’s cancellation.
Meder-Wilgus said her husband,
who told her Thompson is one of the
best stand-up comedians and is witty
and intelligent, introduced her to
Thompson’s music.

MENT
Artist to perform first
solo State College show
Penn State student Mike
Boneshefski said his least favorite
part of last year was the demise of the
Chicago-based band Spitalfield.
Feins like Boneshefski (senior-psy
chology), however, have a chance to
see former member Mark Rose in
concert at 7 tonight at SoZo.
Tonight signifies Rose’s first show
in State College as a solo artist.
The band, which had a nine-year
run, last played in State College in
2004 at The Crowbar, 420 E. College
Ave., where Cell Block now resides.
Rose will be performing alongside
Pennsylvania-native singer/song
writer Lucas Carpenter, who is join
ing forces with the former Spitalfield
member for four or five shows
throughout the state, said Garrett
Bogden, the head of Nittany Booking.
Tonight, Rose and Carpenter will
also be joined by local band Hopes
High and TJ Cornwall of Cloverleaf.
Rose said his sound has evolved
since the break from Spitalfield.
“Spitalfield was a driving pop
sound,” Rose said. “Now the sound is
breaking away into a pop-blues
singer/songwriter style.”
Rose compared his new sound to
that of artists such as John Mayer,
Jason Mraz and Ryan Adams.
Bogden agreed Rose’s sound is
more developed.
“It’s more pop-rock and blues,”
Bogden said. “It’s a more grown up,
more mature sound.”
Rose said he is trying to bridge the
gap between the old and the new,

some songs from his former band
and some of his own, newer music.
“There will be a special cover

The show will be a singer/song

in the past, other artists have come to
State College and stripped their per

“There’s no barricade between the
fans and the artists, it’s really an up
close and intimate show,” he said.
Although Spitalfield is no longer

his solo performances recently. He
described the former band member’s
performance as “pretty amazing”
adding “the guitar work is better and
the lyrics are good.”
Boneshefski said although Rose’s
solo tour is bittersweet with the band
