Enrollment at
all-time high

Penn State President Graham
Spanier opened the Faculty Senate
meeting Tuesday by announcing an
all-time record enrollment at Univer
sity Park and other campuses.
"It's a good problem to have," he
said, while adding the exact enroll
ment numbers are not yet available.
"But next year we want to trim it
down even further."
Penn State was aiming to have a
freshman class of about 7,000 this
year. While exact numbers are not
available yet, the latest estimate of
the actual size of the freshman class
is about 7,350.

Mathieu Ponvert peered inside the
helicopter's cockpit at the glowing
dials and multi-colored displays that
allow a pilot to navigate the sky
unharmed.
"It's quite amazing, it's the first
time I've seen a helicopter [up close]
and it's really well done," Ponvert, a
French international student, said.
About thirty students, primarily
first year seminar Hand's-on Heli
copters students and members of the
American Helicopter Society Penn
State Chapter, attended a presenta
tion meant to teach students about
the different parts of a helicopter.
The presentation began around
7:30 p.m. when a pilot landed an
ECI4S helicopter near the soccer
fields in West Campus.
David Conboy, a check airman and
an instructor pilot for Geisinger Med
ical Center lead the presentation.
"It's an informal question and
answer session. We give them a three
dimensional object instead of an over
head," Conboy said.
The ECI4S is a new addition to the
Geisinger fleet, and is an "identical
twin" to what the military is buying
now, Conboy said.
Conboy showed the students the
different parts of the helicopter, espe
cially some of the unique features that
sets the ECI4S apart from other heli
copters.

will continue to monitor application
trends next year as closely as possible
to guide the final numbers for Univer
sity Park into the zone we want them
to be in," Penn State spokesman Bill
Mahon wrote in an e-mail on Ibesday.
Freshman enrollment last fall was
6,481 at University Park and was
intentionally lower in response to the
Irecord-high freshman enrollment in
2006. That year saw a freshman class
of 8,025.
"It is difficult to precisely predict
how many students will actually
show up on the first day of classes
versus those who say they intend to,
but we do get it right almost every
year," Mahon wrote.

Black to bring election humor to BJC

Just nine days before the presiden
tial election, comedian Lewis Black
will make a stop at the Bryce Jordan
Center.
Bernie Punt, director of sales and
marketing for the BJC, said he
expects a good reception for this
show given the fortunate timing of
the performance on the national cal
endar
Black, a comedian and political
commentator, last came to the BJC
in the summer of 2001, but the show
wasn't popular, Punt said. This
show, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct.
26, is expected to be different, he
said.

Penn State defensive linemen Abe
Koroma and Maurice Evans, who
were both suspended for Saturday's
game against Oregon State, were
not listed Tuesday on the team's
depth chart for this weekend's con
test against Syracuse.
The two were among three play
ers initially suspended after police
say they found a "small amount" of
marijuana at an on-campus apart
ment whose tenants are Koroma,
Evans, tight end Andrew Quarless
and cornerback A.J. Wallace, accord
ing to a search warrant that cites
university housing records.
Quarless, who was initially sus

taming when it pertains to the way
our country is on both sides of the
spectrum," Punt said.
Tickets for students go on sale at
noon today and the first 3,000 tickets
sold to University Park students will
cost $l5. Tickets for the general pub
lic will go on sale 10 a.m. Friday for
$39.75 each.
Punt added hosting Black so close
to the presidential election will affect
the performance.
"He's going to have something to
say about the Republicans, we know
he's going to have something to say
about the Democrats," Punt said.
In fact, the leaders of both Penn
State College Republicans and Penn
State College Democrats see oppor
tunities for Black to take swings at
both presidential candidates.

Sororities invest

The Panhellenic Council
(PHC) has increased its mar
keting efforts, spending almost
the entire recruitment budget
in hopes of encouraging more
women to register for sorority
recruitment.
"Recruitment has more of a
campaign feel to it this year,"
PHC President Anna Marie
DiPietro said. "We published a
20-page booklet that outlines
the aspects of Penn State greek
life. It also has a short biogra
phy of the members of the Pan
hellenic Executive Council
along with information about
each of the 20 chapters here at
PSU."
The booklet was placed in all
freshman girls' mailboxes and
also has information about
scholarships; philanthropies
and the four main greek
events: The
Interfraternity/Panhellenic
Dance Marathon, Greek Week,
Homecoming and Greek Sing,
DiPietro added.
As of press time Tuesday, the
PHC had more'than 500 people
registered for recruitment, a
number Emily Cohen, PHC
vice president for membership,
estimated exceeded the num
ber of recruits registered this
time last year. The recruitment

She added there were 678

recruitment last year by the
registration deadline.
The PHC Executive Council
developed the idea to use a
marketing company to print
brochures, posters and the
information booklets, Cohen
said.
"Greek life has so much to
offer, and in the past, people
truly haven't been informed,"
Cohen said. "So we're trying to
put ourselves out there so
potential new members will
hear about the Panhellenic
Council and the greek commu
nity!,
This is the first year the PHC
has tried to spend most of their
recruitment budget, Cohen
said. The printed materials
were a major part of the budg
et, alopg with highlighters,
mints and notepads the PHC
will be handing out at sched
uled events.
"We're spending all this
money so it will attract
recruits," Cohen said. "Hope
fully, we can give back to the
chapters and give them the
most new members."
