USBWA selects Wright
for All-America squad
Penn State's Tanisha Wright added to
her growing list of accolades when she
was named a first-team All-American by
the United States Basketball Writers
Association.
Wright was one of 10 players selected
to the prestigious team, which was
announced yesterday.
Already this season Wright has
brought home a variety of honors. An
All-Big Ten pick,
Wright also garnered
her third consecutive
Big Ten Defensive
Player of the Year
Award, and is the
only player ever to
win the award more
than once. On the
other end, she fin-
ished the regular W right
season as the Big
Ten's leading scorer, averaging 19.6
points per game.
She also ranked among the league's
best in assists and steals during the
season. Penn State's senior guard is
currently averaging 19.3 points per
game, and is closing in on the 2,000-
point plateau with 1,976 points to her
credit entering Sunday's NCAA Cham
pionship first round game versus Liber
ty.
The Lady Lions face Liberty at 9:30
p.m. on Sunday in College Park, Md.
The game will air live on ESPN2 and
ESPNU and on the radio on the Penn
State Sports Network and www.GoPSUs
ports.com. Should Penn State win, the
Lady Lions will face either Virginia
Tech or DePaul on Tuesday at 7 or 9:30
p.m.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Arnold
Palmer is going to the Masters without
his golf clubs. "I'm not going to play in
anything at Augusta this year," Palmer
said yesterday. "I'm going to say hello to
my friends and do a couple functions
that I would like to do, and then come
back home."
Palmer played in his 50th consecutive
Masters last year and said he would no
longer compete in the major champi
onship he helped put on the map with
charisma and four green jackets. But as
the Masters approaches, Palmer real
izes he will have to adjust to being at
Augusta National without having a spot
in the field.

That means no practice rounds, not
even the Par 3 Tournament.
And while Palmer said he might con-
sider becoming an honorary starter, it
won't be this year.
Instead, he'll attend the Champions
Dinner on Tuesday night and chairman
Hootie Johnson's buffet on Wednesday,
and spend time in between chatting
with his legion of friends and fans.
"I have no intentions of going on the
golf course," Palmer said.
"I'm just going to socialize. I may
change that in years to come. But at the
moment, I just feel like I want to get my
feel for not playing in Augusta. l'or 511
straight years, I played and I loved it.
And I would still enjoy it.
"But I just want to get the feel for not
doing anything."
This could be the first year without
Palmer or Jack Nicklaus, a six 4
Masters champion, since 1954. Nicklaus
had planned to play, but he said chances
were between "slim and none" that he
would play the tournament because he
wants to spend time with a family still
grieving over the recent drowning of hi;
17-month-old grandson.
Nicklaus said he would be at the
Champions Dinner and probably would
play a practice round, perhaps even the
Par 3 Tournament. And he did not rule
out playing Thursday if he felt up to it.
O'Neal likely to sit out
rest of Pacers' season
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Pacers for
ward Jermaine O'Neal likely will not
play again this season because of a
shoulder injury he
sustained nearly two
weeks ago.
Pacers coach Rick
Carlisle said that
doctors are still wait
ing for the swelling
to subside and that,
no decision has been.
made on whether the'
All-Star forward will'
need surgery
O'Neal
"We have to go on the idea that he's
not going to be here," Carlisle said
Tuesday. "That's how we have to'
approach it. We can't be hanging our,
hopes on his return. It's going to be
awhile if he comes back at all."
O'Neal, who is averaging a career
high 24.8 points, was hurt March 3 when
his right arm was pulled back by Den
ver's Francisco Elson on a drive.
He has not played since, and will miss
his sixth straight game when Indiana
meets Utah on last night. While the Pac
ers have won three of the five games;
since the injury, they went 5-10 during ,
O'Neal's 15-game suspension for his
role in the November brawl at Detroit.
If they struggle the same way over
the season's final 20 games, the Pacers
(31-31) could slip out of the playoff race. '
