Illinois accepts invite to Jan. ist Sugar Bowl NEW ORLEANS (AP) Illinois is head ed to the Sugar Bowl. The Big Ten champions accepted an invitation yes terday to the Sugar Bowl, which will be played New Year's Day in New Orleans. It will be the Illini's first trip to the Sugar Bowl. No. 8 Illinois (10-1) will have to wait a few more days to see who its opponent is, though. The opponent will be announced Sunday after the Southeast ern Conference championship game between No. 2 Tennessee and No. 21 LSU. If LSU wins, the Tigers would go to the Sugar Bowl. If the Volunteers win, No. 5 Nebraska could end up in New Orleans. Illinois was the Big Ten's biggest sur prise this year, rebounding from a 5-6 finish last season to win the conference championship. After losing to Michigan on Sept. 27, the Mini didn't lose another game. They clinched at least a share of the Big Ten title by beating Northwestern in the season finale but had to wait for the Ohio State-Michigan game to see who would get the Big Ten's BC S bid. The Buckeyes upset Michigan, giving Illinois the conference championship outright. Maryland Terps bowl into Miami for Orange MIAMI (AP) Maryland, probably the biggest surprise in college football this season, is returning to the Orange Bowl for the first time in 46 years. The seventh-ranked Terrapins (10-1) accepted an invitation to play in the Jan. 2 game yesterday. It will be the team's first bowl appear ance since 1990 and first major bowl game since playing in the 1977 Cotton Bowl.
