Goo Goo Dolls set
to perform tonight

Things are sky-high right now
for the Goo Goo Dolls, currently
headlining MP3.com's first Music
and Technology Tour, which
"slides" into The Bryce Jordan
Center at 8 tonight.
The band's most recent single,
"Black Balloon," danced around the
charts for most of the summer.
Opening for the Goo Goo Dolls,
Los Angeles rockers Tonic also
reaped success contributing to a
soundtrack as well. The single
"You Wanted More" from teen
comedy American Pie enjoyed
heavy radio play throughout the
summer.

But the Music and Technology
Tour doesn't only showcase the
Goo Goo Dolls and its long journey
to fame. The tour features a slew
of promotional information for
MP3.com, makers of the easy-to
download free music Web site that
is rapidly changing the way the
entire music industry views and
handles music distribution.
The tour stops at about 30 col
leges, and the University Park
show follows performances at sev
eral Big Ten schools.
Tickets are 523 for general
admission and are available at The
Bryce Jordan Center, Eisenhower
Auditorium, selected Uni-Mart
ticket outlets and Commonwealth
Campus ticket outlets.

Legendary musician to play at local school

After five decades of endless
performing and recording, May
nard Ferguson can still hit the
high notes.
The legendary jazz trumpeter
and his Big Bop Nouveau Band
will swing into the Bald Eagle
Area High School auditorium at
7:30 tonight. Opening acts at the
concert include the high school
jazz band and Penn State's Centre
Dimensions.
Ferguson advocates jazz and
music education by holding mas
ter classes and playing at school
concerts, said Scott Sheehan,
Bald Eagle band director.
Tonight's show marks Fergu
son's first Centre County appear
ance in about nine years.

Fresh from gigs at first-rate
jazz clubs such as the Blue Note
in New York City and The Attic in
Greenville, N.C., Ferguson and
his nine-piece ensemble are on
the first leg of a 60-date tour that
will run through next July.
In 1950, Ferguson burst on the
big band scene at the age of 22
when he debuted with Stan Ken
ton's orchestra. Ferguson has fos
tered the talent of Chuck Man
gione, Chick Corea and Peter
Erskine, among others.
The 71-year-old musician still
wows audiences with stratospher
ic solos.
Before Ferguson takes the
stage, Centre Dimensions will
perform "Just Friends," "Mama
Llama Samba" and Duke Elling
ton's classic "It Don't Mean A
Thing If it Ain't Got That Swing,"
said Dan Yoder, Penn State pro
fessor of music and band direc
tor.
In addition to the concert, the Eagle Area High School is located
Big Bop Nouveau Band will have one mile south of Milesburg on
clinics for student musicians U.S. Route 220 in Wingate.
Dan Yoder performs with Penn State's Centre Dimensions. The
group will perform tonight at Bald Eagle High School.
