Niners add Greene; 'Boys drop Renfro

The San Francisco 49ers, who
have made a habit of plugging
aging stars into an aging team, yes
terday added Kevin Greene, the
NFL's 1996 sack leader.
The 49ers and Greene, cut Sun
day by the Carolina Panthers,
reached agreement on a six-year
deal worth $l3 million, although
only $350,000 of it will count
against the 49ers' salary cap. He
had also been sought by the Cincin
nati Bengals and Miami Dolphins.
San Francisco has used players
like Greene in the past Deion
Sanders, Rickey Jackson and
Richard Dent were all rent-a-play
ers on the 1994 Super Bowl cham
pions, and Chris Doleman has
played with the 49ers the last two
seasons. Because the 49ers play a
4-3 defense, Greene would proba
bly be used as a third-down pass
rusher since stopping the run is not
his forte.
Cincinnati wanted Greene to pro
vide experience at linebacker in
their new 3-4 defense. Without
Greene, they will use first-round
draft pick Reinard Wilson, who was
a defensive end at Florida State
and will have to learn on the job.
Greene, who had 14 1 / 2 sacks last
season, is 35 and had been seeking
to renegotiate a contract with Car
olina that would have paid him

If Greene plays out this contract,
he would be 41 when it ends, an
unheard-9f age for any NFL player
but a quaterback or kicker.
But he won't.
Greene's agent, Leigh Steinberg,
got him most of his money up front
without hurting the team's salary
cap situation.
It contains a $750,000 signing
bonus $150,000 a year prorated
over six years and just a
$200,000 base salary this season.
There also are $550,000 in incen
tives and a $1.75 million base
salary for next season, not includ
ing a $250,000 workout bonus
payable in March.
Earlier this summer, Steinberg,
who now has nine clients on the
49ers, renegotiated a deal for quar
terback Steve Young that will pay
Young, now 36, $lO million next
season. He conceivably could rene
gotiate some of his other players if

Elsewhere around the league,
teams continued to make minor
adjustments to fill holes in rosters.
The Dallas Cowboys, for exam
ple, released defensive lineman
Leonard Renfro and were seeking a
veteran linebacker to fill out an
inexperienced group of five.
"Leonard raised a lot of eye
brows in camp. He impressed us,"
Dallas owner Jerry Jones said of
the one-time first-round draft pick
of the Philadelphia Eagles.
"But we needed an extra roster
spot so we can evaluate a sixth
linebacker."
The New York Giants terminated
the contract of guard Lance Smith,
a 13-year veteran, to open a spot
for a cornerback. The Giants were
down to two good cornerbacks
after starter Phillippi Sparks was
diagnosed with viral hepatitis and
backup Conrad Hamilton under
went arthroscopic surgery on his
left knee.
