after his head was gashed by a
candlestick-swinging “ER” star
Noah Wyle.
It wasn't an escalation of the
rivalry between the CBS and
NBC medical dramas.
Wyle, who plays Dr. John
Carter, and Berg, who portrays
Dr. Billy Kronk, were rehears
ing the two-man play “The 24th
Day.” Wyle was supposed to
swing the candlestick and miss.
Berg needed six stitches after
Friday’s accident at the Coronet
Theater but was back on stage
for Saturday’s premiere.
“Noah got a little carried
away and put a candlestick on
my head and cracked it open in
the middle of a show,” Berg
said in an interview with televi
sion’s “Extra.” “But we got
through it.”
Willis to play World
War II sergeant
LOS ANGELES Bruce
Willis is likely to star in the
movie version of the 1960 s TV
series “Combat,” Daily Variety
reported Monday.
The movie, to be directed by
Walter Hill, also has attracted
interest from Eddie Murphy
and John Goodman, the trade
paper said. Willis’ production
company will produce.
Willis will portray Sgt. Chip
Saunders, the World War II
fighting man portrayed by Vic
Morrow during the show’s 1962-
67 run on ABC, Variety said.

star acts as raconteur

her attention to younger audi
ences.
Turner regaled an audience
of 300 adults and children Sat
urday with stories and poetry
selections at a Barnes & Noble
Bookstore.
“I’ve been saying that reading
is the motor of the mind, and it
really kind of is,” Turner said.
“The more people are read to,
the more they understand the
language better.”
“Besides, I don’t think the gift
of reading a book should be a
lost art,” said Turner.
'Godfather' director to
preside over Cannes
PARIS Francis Ford Cop
pola will be the godfather of the
Cannes Film Festival.
The Oscar-winning director
of such movies as The Godfa
ther and Apocalypse Now
agreed to preside over the festi
val jury, it was announced Mon
day.
He won Golden Palm awards
at Cannes for his 1974 film The
Conversation and for Apoca
lypse Now in 1979.
“Cannes remains very close
to my memories of tender
moments, and returning as
president of the jury is like a
happy homecoming,” Coppola
said.
The festival runs from May 9
to 20.
