It's true that Gaudio has been inspiring to watch (and probably to play with) knowing that he has returned so successfully from injuries that were expected to per manently derail his playing career. It's also true that he adds a veteran force underneath the boards, one that is able to contend with the best of the conference every game. But the citing of Gaudio as the direct reason of the sudden rise of Penn State basketball is unfair to everyone involved, including Gau dio. The beauty of this team is that, at any given time, the performance of one of seven players can dictate the game. Once Pete Lisicky is hot, there's no stopping his three-point shot when he crosses halfcourt. If Glenn Sekunda is on, there's no better offensive player on the team. When Calvin Booth plays intense defense, he can adjust an entire offensive scheme with his shot-blocking abilities. A Phil Williams pick (if only he'd roll) can create an open shot for anyone. Donovan Williams can guard a player at nearly every position and, once he steps inside the three-point arc, has become a legitimate offen sive threat. And there is no one I'd rather see with the ball in his hands than Dan Earl. But Earl is blossoming into the Big Ten's pre mier point guard, shown by his ability to handle full-court pres sure, create on offense by opening up the passing game by making three-pointers, and now, by pene trating the baselines. The 19-4 record and No. 12 rank ing are a tribute to their cohesive ness and to coach Jerry Dunn's insistence on using a 10-man rota tion and deciding on how to use it against each team. With John Amaechi graduating, the men's basketball staff expected the offensive scheme would revert to perimeter shooting, the team's former weakness and now its most formidable threat. Sekunda and Lisicky are among the nation's top 20 and Earl is capable of making the shot at key times. It makes me wonder why Penn State didn't recruit Earl's brother, Brian, a freshman at Princeton who, earlier in the season, was one of the top three-point shooters in Central Division 50 6 .893 36 20 .643 32 22 .593 30 24 .556 28 25 .528 28 26 .519 20 34 .370 14 40 .259 WESTERN CONFERENCE Midwest Division W L Pct 37 17 .685 36 18 .666 37 20 .649 23 31 .426 18 36 .333 16 38 .296 11 41 .212 Pacific Division 42 12 .778 34 20 .629 27 27 .500 Champion all times EST Collegian Graphic/Kristen Girko Golden State Sacramento Portland L.A. I don't know, maybe Brian Earl wasn't considered Big Ten material, but the usual theory is that if you can shoot, somebody will find a place for you to play. Princeton coach Pete Carril found the need for a three-point shooter in his half-court scheme, a slower version of the motion offense that features the two most basic plays the pick-and-roll and the backdoor. Princeton is on the verge of winning the Ivy League championship and earning an NCAA berth, where it will probably receive a 16th-seed. Remember that the Tigers have nearly pulled off monumental upsets of George town, Syracuse, Villanova and Arkansas. Carril, the owner of a 521-271 record in 30 years, was asked if he ever thought about coaching at a big-time basketball school: "That's a different race, a differ ent track," he said. "In that track, you have stolen stereos, credit cards, beating up your girlfriend. That's what you have at that level. But at the bottom level, they can't play like those guys either." I mention this because Penn State's success has brought expec tations and the Nittany Lions are not only expected to make the NCAA tournament, but now they are expected to play well and win. Hopefully, those expectations won't interfere with the program's clean and respectable reputation. Because if it does, it's not worth it.
