Art Modell's
loyalty to his wallet than
t t spineless slug" read the sign in
front of Municipal Stadium's
Dawg Pound.
The sign referred, of course, to
Cleveland Browns owner Art Mod
ell, who announced last week that
he is moving the team to Balti
more.
The announcement sent a simple
message to the rabid Browns fans
who had supported the team
through thick and thin for fifty
years: screw you.
Modell, in his search to stuff
more money in his already fat
pockets, has broken the hearts of
the people who made him a million
aire. Modell has crushed the spirits
of a city that only two weeks ago
was on a World Series high.
The effect the Browns have on
Cleveland cannot be understated.
This simple scenario can best
describe the grip the Browns have
on the city if the Browns win on
Sunday, everyone in Cleveland is
very happy. If the Browns lose on
Sunday, everyone in Cleveland is
very ticked off.
One can only imagine, then, the
condition the city is currently in.
The city has been abandoned by
a greedy old man who has absolute
ly no concern for the people he is
hurting by moving to Baltimore.
He is concerned only with the prof
it he stands to make, and he'll do
anything to convince his fellow
owners and the league that the peo
ple of Cleveland are unable to sup
port him.
Modell has therefore resorted to
lying. He has said the Cleveland's
civic leaders simply would not help
him to raise the funds to improve
the stadium. In reality, Cleveland
Mayor Mike White has been trying
to get Modell to the bargaining
table for months now. Modell
always responded that he wanted

maneuvers show more
to wait until the season was over to
talk about the issue. He said he
wanted to concentrate on football,
and he assured the people of Cleve
land he had no plans to take his
team elsewhere.
But it is now clear Modell has
had intentions to move the team for
quite a while, but didn't want to
leak any information for fear of a
loss of ticket revenues. He figured
he could milk the city for one last
year. He could take his fans for
everything they were worth.
At his news conference to
announce the move in Baltimore
last Monday, Modell thanked a few
people who helped make his move
possible. He went on to acknowl
edge one of his "most important
new associates," his banker.
Could Modell have made his
main concern any more evident?
He would also go on to give his
apologies to the people of Cleve
land. He said he left part of his
heart and soul there. He said he
was sorry from the bottom of his
heart. As he said all of this, he
could not bring himself to look at
the row of Cleveland media seated
to his right.
There might not have been a
worse, more hollow apology in his
tory. If he was so damn sorry, he
could just sell the team and let it

faithful fans
stay right where it belongs.
The people of Cleveland deserve
a team. They deserve the Browns.
If the NFL cannot realize how well
the team has been supported for all
of these years and allow the Cleve
land Browns to become the Balti
more Browns, nothing in football
will ever be sacred again.
Modell must convince Commis
sioner Paul Tagliabue that the
Browns meet the league's eight cri
teria for a move. Modell has to
prove Cleveland is a "hostile city"
to NFL football.
In the days following the
announcement of the move, Cleve
landers flooded the NFL main
offices with phone calls asking if
the NFL cares at all about them.
They were all greeted with_ the
same response. They were told
unequivocally the league's top pri
ority is the supportive fans of
Cleveland.
This is quite hard to believe. Of
the criteria for approval of a move
mentioned earlier, seven deal with
financial considerations. Only one
deals with fan support.
So it is quite likely Art Modell
will be allowed to leave. He will
leave despite the fact Cleveland
averages over 70,000 fans a game.
He will leave even though Cleve
land has the one of the best local
television ratings in the league. He
will leave because he has no loyalty
and no class.
The fans of Cleveland have
become victims. They have become
victims of greed.
And as long as back-stabbing,
greedy, heartless owners like Art
Modell are in charge, who knows
who is next?
