Amid the successes, flops
the box office went boffo
By JOHN HORN
AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES Box-office
receipts for 1993 may well set a
record, eclipsing the 1989 mark
of $5.1 billion. Behind those
grosses were a variety of films
that clicked and many more that
did not.
The following is a studio-by
studio scorecard of who did
what.
■ COLUMBIA: The Sony studio
was so feeble, chairman Mark
Canton tried to take credit for
the hit In the Line of Fire a
movie Columbia didn't really
make. The Clint Eastwood drama
was financed by Columbia but
produced by independent Castle
Rock Entertainment, and Castle
Rock made most of the key cre
ative decisions.
Besides that, Columbia had a
dismal year. It overspent on The
Age of Innocence, bombed with
Bruce Willis' Striking Distance
and flopped with Geronimo: An
American Legend.
One more thing: Last Action
Hero.
Grade: F.
■ DISNEY: While other studios
raked it in during the summer,
Disney inflicted one bust after
another on moviegoers. Remem

But Disney did take some rare
artistic risks, and with good
results: Both What's Love Got to
Do With It and The Joy Luck
Club were critical and commer
cial successes.
Grade: C.
■ MGM: Six Degrees of Sepa
ration may not make much mon
ey for MGM, but the adaptation
of John Guare's play was among
the year's most thoughtful studio
titles. Benny & Joon generated
modest sales earlier in the year
and sparked a popular sound
track album.
Otherwise, it was one MGM
disaster after another: Untamed
Heart, Rich in Love, Meteor Man,
Undercover Blues, Fatal Instinct
and Son of the Pink Panther.
Grade: Incomplete.
■ORION: The minimajor's out
put was curtailed severely by
financial difficulties, and its
slate was as thin as it was
unpopular. Orion took a gamble
in distributing the obsessive love
story Boxing Helena, but the
company lost an arm and a leg
on the film.
Grade: F.
■ PARAMOUNT: The studio
had two solid blockbusters. One

The Firm and the other was a
stunner —Demi Moore and Rob
ert Redford in Indecent Propo
sal. Even though Sharon Stone's
Sliver was skinned by reviewers,
it played strongly overseas and
on video.
The studio's marketing arm
struggled with Searching for
Bobby Fisher despite some of the
fall's best reviews.
Paramount's Wayne's World 2
and Addams Family Values
played relatively well at year's
end. The only real hole in Par
amount's schedule: No Oscar
caliber film.
Grade: B + .
■ TRISTAR: Unlike sister stu
dio Columbia, TriStar frugally
spent its money and produced
several hits. The studio's invest
ment in the independently pro
duced Cliffhanger was minimal
while the returns were maximal.
Sleepless in Seattle was made
modestly but nevertheless went
on to gross more than $125 mil
lion.
The year for studio chief Mike
Medavoy comes down to the
AIDS drama Philadelphia, the
first such film from a major
studio. The film is likely to draw
several Oscar nominations.
Grade: B-.
