    Campus governments to discuss issues
By JAMES DUFFY
Collegian Staff Writer
With the full Council of Commonwealth Student
Governments meeting tomorrow, Commonwealth
campus student leaders have already formulated
opinions on this year's issues such as poor advising,
inadequate facilities and student apathy.
"Eventually I'm sure (University Park) will have
to face reality and expand our campuses," Allentown
Student Government President Jen Williams said.
At Commonwealth campuses, even academic
classes are tight, Berks campus Student Government
President Tim Moyer said.
"The classes are overcrowded," he said. "Enroll
ment is up but no new buildings have been built."
Brian Suwalski, Hazleton campus president, said
he thinks the Commonwealth campuses are thought
of second when money is allocated for facilities.
There is not enough funding coming in to offer

adequate student counseling and advising, said Janel
Pavlack, president at McKeesport campus.
"Just looking at the way society is, there will be a
greater need for psycological counseling in the
future," Pavlack said.
When Commonwealth campuses are recognized as
equals, it will be easier to get funding for such pro
grams, she said.
There are a lot of problems with student advising
throughout the Penn State system, said Paul Alaksin,
Beaver campus student government president.
"There is a problem with certain faculty not pulling
their own weight," Alaskin said. Some campuses are
not keeping up-to-date on changes in majors, he said.
"Worse than that, some colleges are not giving out
the information they have," Alaskin said.
Faculty are sometimes against getting involved
with student concerns, said Heather Ferguson, vice
president of the Ogontz campus student government.
"Many (teachers) look out for their own interests,"

she said. "They forget that the campus is there for the
students.-
The biggest problem at Ogontz, however, is just get
ting students involved, Ferguson said.
"Because we're a commuter campus just getting
people to come back to campus after classes is hard,"
she said. "We're trying to make this a good campus
but no one wants to put in the time or effort."
Because of ethnic diversity, it is hard to provide pro
grams that everyone will get involved in, Ferguson
said.
"People tend to stay in their own cliques," she said.
There is no real problem between cultures, she said.
"You'll find personal cliques anywhere you go."
Pavlack said many commuter students at McKees
port campus really don't think of it as a college.
"They go to class and go home, - she said. "They
don't get into the fun part of college life." The hardest
part is to get students to get involved without offering
them credits, she said.
