Women's
By PETER FAGGEN
Collegian Sports Writer
Three and a half million women around the
country under the age of 19 play competitive soc
cer, and with that influx of young talent, the
sport has flourished at the intercollegiate level,
including Penn State.
Led by second-year coach Denny Hall, the
Penn State women's soccer club (3-2) has had
a successful season despite having to play the
majority of its games on the road. Over the last
eight days, the Lady Lions, now affiliated with
the Big Ten Conference, have played four games
against St. Francis, Michigan, Bucknell, and
Lafayette.
And at 10:30 tomorrow morning at Pollock
Field the Lady Lions will face California, Pa. in
search of their fourth victory.
"I'm happy with the team's progress so far
despite the fact that we still don't have many
FL's toughest defenses to clash when Raiders battle Bears
By DAVE GOLDBERG
AP Football Writer
In 1984, the Bears and Raiders met in
Chicago in a game that featured the
year's two Bruise Brothers. They meet
in Los Angeles Sunday in a matchup of
the year's two biggest early-season sur
prises.
What we have here are the NFL's two
stingiest teams the Raiders have
given up just 25 points in three games,
the Bears have allowed 29. Both, natu
rally, are unbeaten.
We also have two teams that don't
exactly have Joe Montana at quar
terback after Chicago's Jim Har
baugh threw for just 47 yards against
Minnesota last week, Mike Ditka sug
gested he'd run the ball 70 times if he
had to. Even with Howie Long out, that
probably won't work against the Raid
ers.
So the winner is probably the team
that throws better. The Raiders are
favored by 1 1 / z points, meaning the odd
smakers think the Bears may be a mite
better call it the NFC edge.
But home field advantage doesn't
mean much in the L.A. Coliseum, which
is likely to draw a lot of Chicago expa
triates.
On the other hand, back to the passing
game Jay Schroeder may not throw
better than Harbaugh.

After hosting a preseason tournament over
Labor Day weekend with Bloomsburg, Michigan
and Gannon, Penn State took its first step
toward its season long quest: to receive a bid to
the NCCSA National Soccer Tournament in Aus
tin, Texas in November. Although Big Ten com
petition will not begin for a few seasons, the
team with the best overall record in the confer
ence will receive the bid. A three-day road trip
in mid-October, when the team will play three
games in three days at Navy, Delaware and
Elizabethtown will tell Hall more about his team
and its chances to make the NCCSAs.
Despite a tough opening loss to LaSalle, the
team rebounded with a 4-3 victory over St. Fran

traveled nine hours by bus to Ann Arbor to play
Michigan, whom they beat, 3-2.

"We have a better team than last year
because of our new offensive style. Now we have
five midfielders instead of three. It's more fun
and we are scoring more goals, - Brown said.
With the extra midfielders, seven different
players have cracked the scorebook for the
Lions this season. Junior forward Dina Dinacci,
who has been bothered by an ankle injury and
is questionable for tomorrow's game, has scored
several key goals for the team, including the
game winner against St. Francis.

Hall also has been pleased with the play of his
fullbacks and the goaltending of senior Andrea
Tramontana and freshman Laura Jackson.
Despite being a club sport, the program is still
operated like any other varsity sport at the Uni

The team held its annual tryouts in August,
and the 58 players that tried out grueled through
three-a-day practices. Thirty women made the
team, which is divided into two squads, blue and
white. The white team, which fields more expe

against other schools. Playing on the blue team
prepares the less experienced players for future
games. Every afternoon, along with Hall, assis

the fact that the soccer team is not yet included
as a varsity sport doesn't concern coach Hall.
"I would very much like to see the women's
soccer team become a varsity sport, but I have
excellent trust and respect for the decisions of
Jim Tarman and the athletic department. The
department has been under a lot of pressure
with the University's acceptance to the Big Ten
Conference," Hall said.
Over the last year, 350 women have contacted
the soccer program about playing for Penn
State.
"Soccer around here is a great, great sport
and we run a very structured program," Hall
said. The players follow a strict fitness program
and practice year around in the indoor facilities.
Every summer, the soccer program sponsors
a soccer camp for high school players.
"Women's soccer is taking a giant step for
ward in the nation, and we're pleased to be a
part of it," Hall said.
