    lowa crushes Kansas; Syracuse wins
By The Associated Press
Michigan’s ninth-ranked basketball
team got an icy reception in Alaska,
while No. 7 Kansas felt the heat in
Hawaii.
No. 17 Arizona beat Michigan 79-64
Saturday in the semifinals of the
Great Alaska Shootout. A few thou
sand miles away, No. ll lowa clob
bered Kansas 100-81 in the semifinals
of the Maui Classic.
Kansas Coach Larry Brown said
lowa s full-court press exploited
weaknesses in the Jayhawks’ back
court.
“1 think they wanted us to shoot
outside and shoot quickly and not get
Danny (Manning) involved in the
offense," Brown said. “That's just
what we did."
Manning, a 6-foot-ll preseason All-
America, was held to seven points in
the second half after getting 16 in the
first half. He fouled out with 4:37 left
in the game.
One of Manning’s fouls triggered an
outburst by Brown that led to a tech
nical foul against the Kansas coach.
“I was upset and I said something
about it," Brown said. “But that was
not the game. The game was decided
when lowa fought back and got the
lead and then we didn’t play as a
team.”
lowa guard Jeff Moe came off the
bench to spark the Hawkeyes with 22
points, including 15 on 3-point shots.
“He's a terrific sixth man,” lowa
Coach Tom Davis said. “Coming off
the bench, I don’t know if there’s
anybody in the country who’s better."
One of the keys to Arizona’s victory
over Michigan was its 35-28 rebound
ing edge.
“We knew we had to hit the
boards," said Arizona forward Sean
Elliot, who had 14 points and eight
rebounds. “We’re physical and so are
they.”
Guard Steve Kerr had 14 points and
five assists for Arizona.

Michigan Coach Bill Frieder said
his team has a lot of room for im
provement.
“Our inside defense has to get
better, ” he said, “and we have to do a
better job of rebounding. But all those
things come with experience."

perdine upset No. 20 DePaul in over
time, 84-76.
Yesterday Kansas met Illinois for
third place at Maui, followed by lowa
against Villanova for the
championship. Michigan faced Ala
bama-Birmingham for third place at
Anchorage.
Sherman Douglas scored 24 points
to lead Syracuse, which plays Arizo
na for the Alaska Shootout title to
night, over UAB.
“I think we did a great job using
our half-court trap and pressing them
both man-to-man and zone," Douglas
said. “In the first half, the flow was
going to me, and when I get on a roll
it’s kind of hard to stop. "
Despite the victory, Syracuse
Coach Jim Boeheim was upset that
the Orangemen missed half of their 28
free throws.
“We are not going to beat anybody
from the free throw line," he said.
“We work at it every day but that's
something I have no control over. It’s
going to cost us but we have no real
control over it.”
Jeff Lebo scored 21 of his 28 points
from 3-point range in leading North
Carolina to its third victory of the
season. Richmond trailed by only six
points with 13 minutes left, but North
Carolina scored the next five points to
break the game open.
Pittsburgh Coach Paul Evans said
he "screamed at my guys for 10
minutes" at halftime, with the Panth
ers leading by just three points. He
was happier in the second half, which
Pitt opened with an 18-2 run.

Robert Lock scored 18 points to
lead Kentucky, which put visiting
Hawaii away with a 17-0 run in the
second half.
Dean Garrett scored 25 points and
Rick Calloway added 19 as Indiana
began defense of its NCAA
championship.
Vernon Maxwell hit two free throws
with six seconds left to give Florida
the Big Apple NIT championship over
Seton Hall.
