NHL draft to be held in U.S. for first time
By HARRY ATKINS
AP Sports Writer
DETROIT The NHL will hold its annual draft
of amateur players outside of Canada for the first
time in its 70-year history tomorrow because
Detroit Red Wings General Manager Jimmy De
vellano kept asking, "Why not?"
. For years, the NHL draft was held in Montreal,
a city steeped in hockey history. A few years ago,
however, the draft date went head-to-head with the
Montreal Grand Prix and the NHL governors
didn't like it.
The league moved its draft to Toronto, but
Devellano kept pushing to let some of the other
NHL cities in on the fun.
"I thought it would be a terrific way for us to
showcase our sport during the off-season and
maybe help some of our cities where the NHL isn't
so strong," Devellano said.
Somebody finally listened and the draft is com
ing to Joe Louis Arena.
In addition to the draft, the NHL has set up a
Hall of Fame exhibit at Cobo Hall, next door to the
arena. The NHL will induct 10 men into the Hall
during a $l5O-a-plate induction dinner Monday
evening in the Westin Hotel.
The governors also will hold their annual con
gress where, again, owners may be asked to hear
die St. Louis Blues' complaint against the Red

Wings for hiring away Jacques Demers as coach.
The issue has been tabled several times. The
public is welcome to attend the draft which begins
at noon tomorrow.
The Buffalo Sabres have the first pick and they
are expected to select Pierre Turgeon, brother of
the Hartford Whalers' Sylvain Turgeon.
The younger Turgeon, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound cen
ter, is considered the most gifted offensive player
available.
Turgeon had 52 goals and 48 assists in 40 games
last season for the Granby Bisons of the Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League.
The elder Turgeon said his brother "has really
grown up as a person" and holds a longshot hope
that he will be taken by the Boston Bruins, who
have the No. 3 pick in the draft.
If the Sabres fail to take Turgeon, the New
Jersey Devils, picking second, say they will.
"If they didn't take him, I wouldn't call a
timeout," said Max McNab, the Devils general
manager.
Also high on every scout's list is 6-3, 200-pound
Brendan Shanahan, a big right wing with the
London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.
Shanahan had 30 goals and 28 assists in 38 games
last season.
The Red Wings, desperately in need of help at
right wing, might be tempted to trade for a shot at
Shanahan.

"I really can't see anybody trading away a
chance to draft that kid," Devellano said. "I
imagine we'll just try to pick the best athlete
available when our time comes."
Among the other players high on the list of the
NHL Central Scouting Bureau are Dave Ar
chibald, a center from the Portland Winter Hawks
of the Western Hockey League, and three de
fensemen Portland's Glen Wesley and Chris
Joseph of the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL,
and Wayne Mcßean, a defenseman from the
Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL.
Some scouts believe Mcßean is the closest
competitor to Ttirgeon's No. 1 spot.
The Scouting Bureau ranks goaltetiders sepa
rately, and Jimmy Waite of Chicoutimi of the
QMJHL is a clear-cut. No. 1.
Unlike last year, this does not appear to be a
good year for players from the United States. With
the exception of North Bay Centennial defenseman
Adam Burt, a native of Detroit, the first round is
likely to be all-Canadian
It is not a good year for Europeans, either. In
fact, Winnipeg Jets assistant GM and director of
scouting Mike Smith said it's possible no Euro
peans will be taken in the first three rounds.
As far as drafting position is concerned, 11 of the
CSB's top 20 are defensemen, another turnaround
from last year, when offensive players were in the
majority.

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday

according to team spokesman Dan Edwards.

•In some sports, fewer than 20 percent graduated, according to a
study by the Gainesville Sun.
The Gator basketball team in a recent five-year period graduated

In the second, Seaver struck out
two batters but allowed a fourth run

Carreon and Clint Hurdle singled in
the third and Steve Springer hit an
RBI double off the center-field wall.
Seaver left the game with one out,
and both runners eventually scored.

the season. He became just the sixth major-league
pitcher to reach 200 saves. Rollie Fingers is the all-time
leader with 341.
Reliever Charlie Pule() won his first decision of the
season.
Dale Murphy hit an RBI double in the first and Dion
James, stuck in a 5-for-52 slump, had a run-scoring single
in the second that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead off Ted
Power.
The Reds scored four times in the bottom of the second
off Larry McWilliams, making his second start for the
. Braves since being recalled from Class AA Greenville.
,Tracy Jones had a one-out RBI single, and Barry Larkin
batting just .211 hit a three-run homer to center field,
,his fifth of the season.
James had another RBI single in the fourth and Grif

whom he spent eight seasons of his 13-year major-league
career.
McWilliams lasted five innings and gave up four runs

"I definitely came back to be a
starting pitcher, - Seaver said when
his return to the Mets was announced
last Saturday. "If, however, that
means I have to pitch in long relief to
do that, that's fine with me."
After a contract disagreement with
the Mets in 1977, Seaver requested a
trade and was dealt to the Cincinnati
Reds in midseason. The Reds sent
Seaver back to the Mets on Dec. 16,
1982, and he went 9-14 with a 3.55 ERA
for New York in 1983.
The Mets did not protect Seaver in
the free-agent compensation draft
after the 1983 season and the Chicago
sixth after giving up eight hits and four runs
DETROIT Mike Felder had five hits, one of which
started a three-run seventh-inning rally in which two
walks and a hit batsman forced home the runs as the
Milwaukee Brewers beat Detroit 8-5.
With the Brewers trailing 4-3, Felder led off the inning
with a single to right off Eric King. Rick Manning reached
on a fielder's choice when catcher Mike Heath's throw to
second on his bunt was too late to catch Felder and Cecil
Cooper, attempting to sacrifice, beat out another bunt for
a hit.
Pinch-hitter Glenn Braggs then lined back to King
whose throw to first doubled off Cooper and Greg Brock
was walked intentionally to re-load the bases.
King walked Jim Paciorek to force in Felder and hit Bill
Schroeder with an 0-2 pitch to force in Manning. Morris
Madden, making his major league debut, took over with a
1-0 count on Jim Gantner and threw three successive balls
to force Brock across.
Juan Castillo singled home two more runs in the eighth
to make it 8-4 and Darrell Evans hit his eighth homer in
the ninth for Detroit's final run.
Bill Wegman, 5-5, was the winner, allowing four runs
and eight hits in six innings. Chris Bosio pitched the final
three innings for his second save.
White Sox selected him. Seaver was
15-11 in 1984 and was 16-11, among
them his 300th career victory, in 1985
for the White Sox.
Seaver became a free agent when
he did not re-sign with. Boston after
last season. He had a 7-13 record
overall, including 5-7 with a 3.80 ERA
for the Red Sox. Seaver did not pitch
in the American League playoffs or
the World Series loss to the Mets
because of the knee injury. He under
went arthroscopic surgery on his
right knee at the end of October.
Seaver won the National League Cy
Young award with the Mets in 1969,
1973 and 1975.
