STATE COLLEGE, NITTANY MALL Becker, Edberg advance at Queen's Club tournament By ANDREW WARSHAW AP Sports Writer LONDON West German Boris Becker and Sweden’s Stefan Edberg, two of the big favorites for Wimbledon, reached the third round of the $300,000 Stella Artois grass court championships at Queen’s Club yesterday. Jimmy Connors, forced like many others to play twice within a few hours to make up for a backlog of matches, also advanced to the last 16, while French Open finalist Mats Wilander of Sweden was one of four seeds elimi nated. . Becker, seeking a third straight Wimbledon title, dropped his serve twice in the first set of his second-round match against American Peter Fleming but won 6-4, 6-2. Becker played patchily early in the match but was able to break Fleming repeatedly with stinging passing shots. After saving four break points at 2-3 in the second set, he ripped off the last four games. Edberg also had a tough start and had to save four set points in the opening set against Kelly Evernden of New Zealand before winning 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Connors looked good in Tiis first-round match against Danie Visser of South Africa, winning 6-3, 6-4. But when he returned later, Connors had to call on all his experi ence in beating Britain’s Stephen Shaw 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-5. Shaw saved three match points in the second set and led 3-1 in the third but just missed pulling off the biggest win of his career. Four seeds lost on the third day of this Wimbledon warmup event. The biggest upset was that of Wilander, the world’s third*ranked player and seeded No. 3, who was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 by West Germany’s Eric Jelen in the first round. .C Al AIEAf JHOES ANOHK AND STACKED HEEL SHOE SALE SK SALE AND FLAT SHOE SALE AND $ SALE AND PRETTY PUMP SALE SHOES FOR A SPECIAL OCCASIO AND HIGH HEELED SHOE SALE / AND STACKED HEEL SHOE SALE SALE AND FLAT SHOE SALE AND SALE ANO PRETTY PUMP SALE A SHOES FOR A SPECIAL OCCASIC ANO HIGH HEELEO SHOE SALE t ANO STACKED HEEL SHOE SALE SALE AND FLAT SHOE SALE AND SALE AND PRETTY PUMP SALE / SHOES FOR A SPECIAL OCCAS’ AND HIGH HEELED SHOE SAI AND STACKED HEEL SHOE S SALE ANO FLAT SHOE SALF SALE AND PRETTY PUMP? In the French Open, Wilander had displayed a new aggressive style, especially on his serve and said he hoped to use it at Wimbledon, which he never has won. But in a rain-interrupted first match on grass since Paris, he struggled all the way against Jelen. Jelen, a big-serving grass court expert who reached the round of 16 at last year’s Wimbledon, let slip two match points Tuesday and allowed Wilander to square the match. When play ended for the day, Jelen had forged ahead 2-0 in the third set. When the match resumed yesterday, Wilander looked the more likely winner. He held serve three times at love and saved a third match point as he broke Jelen when the German served for the match at 5-3. But Wilander’s serve then deserted him, and although he saved a fourth match point with a forehand cross-court winner, Jelen clinched the victory on his fifth try when a backhand lob by the Swede fell long. “I would have been glad to get a few matches on grass under my belt,” Wilander said. “But I knew I would have about a one percent chance to win against Jelen.” He said a two-week break between Paris and Wimble don was insufficient time to get acclimated. “It would be OK from clay to hard courts, or hard courts to grass. But from clay to grass, it is not enough time,” he said. “To get my mind on Queen’s just after losing in the French, that was also hard.” Wilander said he would go to Dublin, Ireland, to play in a grass court exhibition series next week. Ousted with Wilander in the first round yesterday were No. 10 Scott Davis, No. 11 Robert Seguso and No. 16 Tim Wilkison, all of the United States. 15%-30%* Reg. to $60.00 NOW 19.99-32.99 D DEPARTMENT STORES ‘Special Group ■CL** • « P ' SALE * OUR TRADITIONAL SUMMER CLEARANCE STARTS WEDNESDAY WE ARE KNOWN FOR OUR SPECIAL PRICES & VALUES SO THAT YOU CAN SAVE WITH CONFIDENCE 30-60% off Mrnzz 109 S.
