Trackmen face stiff competition at relays
. By STACEY JACOBSON
Collegian Sports Writer
Sandwiched between the Dogwood Relays and
the Penn Relays, two highly-acclaimed meets, the
men's track team is hosting a meet of its own
today and tomorrow the Nittany Lion Relays.
This meet, which starts at 1 p:m. today and 9:30
a.m. tomorrow, should give the squad a rest from
the intense competition, right?
Wrong.
The Nittany Lion Relays, held at the outdoor
track, features a field of competition mostly from
the Northeast, but Canadian club teams will add
former Olympians to the field. Bill Motti and Dave
Steen, former Olympian decathaletes from
France and Canada, respectively, will push the
field in open events such as the hurdles and discus.

This is Easter weekend and many
people are taking the opportunity to
go somewhere they haven't been in
quite awhile home. The same holds
true for the women's track team, as it
hosts the Nittany Lion Relays today
at 1 p.m. and tomorrow at noon at the
Nittany Lion Track on University
Drive across from newly-completed
Holuba Hall.

"It's really encouraging that we have such
highly-competitive entries over Easter weekend,"
Head Coach Harry Groves said. Some of the
events Groves expects particularly good distances
and • times in are the javelin, 110-meter high
hurdles, and the 1,500-meter run.
Today's competition will feature decathalon
events and the 10,000-meter run. All other events
will be held tomorrow.
In the javelin'competition, Bill Mitrovich the
former meet record holder at 235 feet will be
back to defend his record. However, the distance
may be shorter due a new design in the javelin.
The balance point of this year's javelin has been
changed to decrease the length of throws because
some throws were extending onto the track.

Jordan said. "There 'will be a full
slate of events plus the relay events
at the end of the meet."
Jordan explained her team's strat
egy for the weekend succintly, keep
ing next week's track classic at
Philadelphia in mind.
"This weekend we'll just concen
trate on getting people qualified for
Easterns (the ECAC Outdoor
Championships)," she said. "It will
be a tune up for the Penn Relays, and
we're expecting a good meet. At the
Penn Relays we'll be looking more
for national qualifiers."

this meet will offer him a chance to work on his
timing in the javelin.
"The competition won't really affect my perfor
mance," he said. "I'm concerned with proper
technique and getting my timing down."
Sophomore Michael Timpson will challenge the
field for the Lions in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Groves said there is a possibility of breaking the
record in the 1500-ineter run. Last year's record
was 3:48.02.
"This is a local meet and it gives us a good
chance to advance," he said.
Weather will play a big part in the times and
distances at. the meet, but the meet will not be
canceled due to inclement weather.
"I've never canceled a meet in my life," Groves
said, implying that the rain and cold scheduled to
move into Happy Valley won't stop the show.
The ECAC Region Outdoor
Championships will be held May 14-10
at Fairfax, Va. So far, several of the
Lady Lions have qualified to compete
at Fairfax, where Penn State will
pursue its seventh straight regional
outdoor title. In addition to the Penn
Relays, Jordan hopes to see her
squad turn in national qualifying
times at the Regional
Championships.
Even if none of the Lady Lions
wake up on Sunday with an invitation
to the NCAA Championships in their
Easter baskets, they'll still have an
opportunity to earn one in the follow
ing weeks of the season.

Baseball team set
for pair of twinbills
By TODD A. MOUNTFORD
Collegian Sports Writer
The time has come for the base
ball team to get off the roller
coaster of inconsistency and get
down to the serious business of
winning conference games.
Penn State (16-14) will battle
Duquesne (14-9, 1-7 Atlantic 10)
today and tomorrow in two 1 p.m.
twinbills at Beaver Field. These
will be the Lions' first A-10 West-
ern Division games of the season.
Penn State will probably be
without the leadership of Head
Coach Shorty Stoner, who was hit
in the face with a batted ball
during pre-game practice on Tues
day.
"He's doing much better today
(Wednesday)," said Ann Stoner,
who answered the phone for her
husband. "But he will do a lot
better if he just takes it easy. It's a
day-to-day thing with his eye."
One person who does have his
eyes open is Assistant Coach Jim
Farr. He said the Lions are doing
well-with pitching and hitting, but
need to play good defense to start
winning more games.
"We need to make the routine
plays," Farr said, "because we're

"But it's been a team thing,"
Farr said. "We don't have any
real outstanding players."
One person who has stood out,
however, is freshman centerfield
er Keith Ripka. He leads the team
in batting with a .363 average, and
fielding percentage at .962.
Farr said he will go with his
usual lineup this weekend, which
lately has had Doug Keener at
third base, and Tim Hurley and
John Schreiner taking turns at.
first.
Keith Bevenour (4-1, 1.32 ERA)
and Joel Johnston (4-2, 4.43) are
slated as today's starting pitchers,
but Farr said he is undecided
about who will pitch tomorrow.
Penn State swept three games
from the Dukes last. year.
