And even more pres sure is put on a team that is heavily favored to win the championship, since each member of that team is expected to perform at his or her best. That situation is exactly what the women's tennis team faces this weekend when it travels to Mor gantown, W.Va., in search of a second straight Atlantic 10 Championship. The Lady Lions are top-seeded and a heavy favorite to win the title. They disposed of No. 2 Rutg ers, 8-1, No. 3 Temple, 8-1, and No. 4 West Virginia, 9-0 earlier this season to gain the first-round bye. George Washington and Massachu setts round out the field. The team's first match will most likely be against West Virginia this afternoon in the semi-finals. The championship match will be played tomorrow morning. On paper, Penn State should run away with the title. But as every 'one knows, in big events the under dog so many times finds a way to pull off the upset. "We are definitely the team to beat since we have already beaten the other top seeds. They will be gunning for us. We must guard against being overcon fident. If we go into the matches thinking we are already the best, it's going to be a long weekend." One thing to keep in perspective is the fact that all three regular season victories over the other top teams came in the friendly con fines of the Penn State Tennis Club. Now the Lady Lions must play on the road, which could make things more difficult, especially since the team has lost its last three road matches. Bortner feels he has prepared the team for the challenge. "We've worked about as hard as we could getting ready," the veter an coach said. "We are pasically healthy going in and that is crucial. The team is looking forward to the opportunity. I'm 'anxious to see how we'll react to the pressure, especially in the close matches, because we are such a young team." The Lady Lions will go with the lineup they have used most of the season. In singles, Claudia Karabe dian will occupy the No. 1 spot, followed in order by Darnell Ad COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED ADS COUNTERPERSONS NEEDED FULL and part-time. As long as we play the way we did before against them, we'll win." "I'm excited to be a part of the championships," Thomas said. "I'll probably be a little nervous at first but settle down after the first point." Out of the conference's 10 schools, only six will be competing. Bortner said it is unfortunate that every team in the conference will not be represented. "The reason the other / teams are not participating is because they don't feel they match up with ev eryone else," he said. "Overall, it does not make the conference itself look very good." The Towson State match-up did nothing but leave a bad taste in the team's mouth, but Loyola and Rutgers were a different story. The Lions limped away from thrilling overtime contests with the Greyhounds and the ° Scarlet Knights wearing the bumps and bruises of determination. If a team could be nationally ranked for its determination and heart, Penn State would surely dominate the league. But effort is not taken into account in the final score, so when the team travels to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County tomorrow it hopes to bring back some good news to go with its turf burn. The unranked Retrievers sport an uninspiring season record of 3-7, but upon closer investigation, the team's intimidating schedule indicates that statistics don't al ways speak for themselves. UMBC boasts a schedule that is top heavy with top-ranked teams. So far this year, the Retrievers have met national powerhouses Navy, Virgin ia, Towson State and Cornell. And although the scoreboard may not always be in its favor after the game is over, UMBC has proven that it can play with the big boys. "I think we'll beat UMBC by a few goals if we play like we did at Rutgers," senior attacker Scott McKeon said. "They're not having a stellar year, they're having an average year. But you never know, all of a sudden you play them and they play great." Penn State wants no surprises this weekend, however, and Head Coach Glenn Thiel said the team is ready for the challenge. "I'm pleased with the way we've been playing," Thiel said. "Our goal now is to keep going and play at that same level. If we're not ready to play they're going to make us look really bad. . , . • ,OP. • 1 - 0 kl‘ * ' t°s4k The Daily Collegian Friday, April 17, 1987-13 "This is the time of year when everyone starts talking about respect," he added. "We know other teams respect us, but what we really want right now is a win." Tomorrow, the Lions will face a rock-steady UMBC defense as well as a speedy Retriever offense. But that's nothing new to the Lions, who are blessed with an offense of "now you see 'em, now you don't" sprinters and a defense that won't let opponents through unless they know the password. Thiel said the strategy will be to keep the pressure on Retriever goaltender Peter Love, adding that if the Lions remain calm and keep control of the ball they should come away victorious. Boasting a record of 7-3, the Lions round out the second half of their season hoping for five straight wins that would secure a berth to the playoffs. After the overtime pressure-cookers at Loyola and Rutgers, the team is technically only two goals away from being a nationally ranked squad. . It's easy to harbor bad memories about past defeats, but when speaking of last weekend's blood-bath with Rutgers, Thiel said the loss was not negative. "It's a bitter pill to swallow, but there is nothing you can do once the game is over," Thiel said. "I've been more upset when we've won and played poorly. Winning or losing is the bottom line obviously, but you're not going to win them all. .. . Win or lose, it isn't all that key to me." At this point, the Lions are tired of playing their hearts out and coming up on the short end of the stick. They're tired of that empty feeling when the score indicates they lost by one when they know the game was theirs. In short, they're tired of being victims of circumstance. "After the (Rutgers) game (Scarlet Knights Coach Tom) Hayes shook all of our hands and told every single person that we shouldn't have lost that game," McKeon said. "We may not be the flashiest team, but we work just as hard for what we have. I'm proud as hell to be a part of the team because I think we've got a lot of guts." .„.-.... ,,, E , :: : : 1rc i :::::::::,,,,,„T........nireMiii , ••••••• , A1fiti .: .....:::',:.. , : i'..,i'.:...:. • : . , • :: • : , iiai1' i , ,iiMi,.. : * ......
