14—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, April 15, 1987 Wittman succeeds at more than tennis By LEW BOSCO Collegian Sports Writer Most athletes who master a sport begin playing the game at an early age. For example, when they were five years old both Pete Rose and Jimmy Connors were playing their respective sports. There are, however, some exceptions to such head starts on success. Senior Donna Wittman, co captain of the women's tennis team, is one of those exceptions. Wittman, an accounting major from Pittsburgh, didn't even pick up a tennis racket until she was 14. Her brother, David, played tennis for Baldwin High School and was the first person to interest her in the game. He eventually talked her into trying out for the Baldwin women's team. "I didn't really think I was very good when I went out for the team," Wittman said. "I had only played with David every so often. I made the team my freshman year, although I didn't start until the following year." From that point, Wittman started playing tennis every day and gained mope and more interest in the game. She decided she wanted to take lessons in order to improve her play. "The lessons I wanted to take cost $2l an hour," she said. "So when I was 15 I got a full-time job during the summer to pay for them. They really helped me get better, but I still didn't think I was as good as I should have been at that point. Our high school program was really weak and I didn't get a chance to gain a lot of solid match experi ence." As a result, Wittman entered and played in a number of tournaments the following summer and obtained the experience she lacked. When it was time to decide on a college to attend, Wittman wanted to play tennis at Penn State, but she knew she would have to make the team on her own. "Since our high school program was not well known, I wasn't able to be recruited," she said. "At first I wasn't sure I could even try out for the team but decided to take a chance." At the time, Head Coach Jan Bortner had never seen Wittman play, but he couldn't help but know about her because her older sister Diane worked at the Penn State Tennis Club. "Before she tried out for the team, Diane kept telling me that Donna was going to play on the team when she got here," Bortner said. "Donna's biggest weakness was that she lacked physical strength, but I decided to take her as a walk-on." • Brothers Pizza Fast . . . Free . . . The senior co•captain of the women's tennis team is an Academic All-American and Lion Ambassadors Bortner is glad that he made that choice. "Donna has done a great job every year, espe cially in being a co-captain this year," Bortner said. "She plays well in the big matches because she has the ability of raising her game a notch. She has outstanding concentration, is tough mentally, is very intelligent and knows what it takes to be a winner." But making the squad as a walk-on is not the. only big accomplishment in her four-year career at Penn State. Wittman was named an Academic All-Atlantic 10 Conference player this year and last, and was named an Academic All-American this year. She is the only person on the team who has garnered these honors. To qualify for Academ ic All-Conference status, a player must maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average and start in at least 70 percent of the matches. One would think that would be enough work to keep a person more than busy, but Wittman's is also involved in other activities. She is a member of Lion Ambassadors, a group of students who work with alumni to promote the University. She is also a member of Sigma lota May 11 THEATRE FILM MAKEUP INTERMEDIATE METAL ARTS ADVANCED METAL ARTS INTRODUCTORY FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING INTRODUCTORY MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING INTRODUCTORY FEDERAL INCOME TAXATION FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING II AUDITING MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING INTRODUCTORY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS MTWRF APPLICATIONS OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT MANAGERIAL FORECASTING MANAGERIAL FORECASTING PRINCIPLES OF MARKETING THE ART OF THE CINEMA FILM HISTORY AND THEORY INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITINC SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATION OF INSTRUCTION ORGANIZATION & ADMIN OF INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEMS MTWRF ECONOFIICS OF INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEMS SEMINAR IN BILINGUAL EDUCATION REMEDIAL READING IN THE CLASSROOM ANAL/THEO/PRACTICE IN BILINGUAL ED PROGRAM MTWRF MICROCOMPUTER APP IN EDUCATIONAL ADMIN EDUCATION IN AMERICAN SOCIETY INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION NT4RF FIELD EXPERIENCES ADVANCED PRODUCTION CARTOGRAPHY • Labor & Parts • 1 year warranty IBM XT TM • 1 qam - Bpm Compatible ___ - _ ‘f ! * Complete system Turbo Mono sys. $779.00 Color sys. - add $2OO MASTER COMPUTER, Inc. 315 S. To top it off, Wittman also works part time as a research assistant for Arthur Patterson Jury Analysts, Inc. in State College. Looking back on her tennis career at Penn State, Wittman finds it hard to believe it's coming to a close, but there are special moments which she will always remember. "The four years have gone by so fast," she said. "I would Ilve to say the most exciting moment was when the team won the Eastern Regionals by one-half point over Boston College back in 1985. "I am most proud of the way I came back earlier this season from my shoulder injury," she added. "I injured it over Christmas .and wasn't sure I'd play at all this spring. I was out for a month and a half, but was determined to work my way back into the lineup." After graduation, Wittman plans to play in a number of tournaments this summer. When the summer ends, she might be putting the racket away in order to concentrate on her accounting career at Arthur Young, a Big Eight accounting firm in Pittsburgh.
