A man many experts call the best
known novelist of his generation will
read some of his work here today.
William Styron, award-winning au
thor of Sophies's Choice, will read at 8
tonight in 112 Kern.
"He is probably the best-known
novelist of his generation internation
ally," said James L.W., West HI,
professor of English.
Styron, who has spent most of his
career writing novels, has been re
warded for his devotion. In 1951, he
received the Prix de Rome of the
American Academy of Arts and Let
ters for his first novel, Lie Down in
Darkness, followed in 1967 by the
Pulitzer Prize for The Confessions of
Nat Turner. Most recently, Styron
won the National Book Award in 1979
for Sophie's Choice.
Styron will read "Shadrach," a
short story that originated from his
work on Sophie's Choice.
A graduate of Duke University,
Styron was a Marine during the Ko
rean war. He incorporated experi
ences from the service in his novella
The Long March and the manuscript
The Way of the Warrior.
In addition to writing novels, Sty
ron helped establish The Paris Re
view with writers including George
Plimpton, Peter Matthiessen and
Donald Hall.
Overall, Styron is a "serious think
er and writer about the human condi
tion," West said.

Sunday, April• 26 Spring good times get serious. And
there should be enough sun so that you won't have
to wait for summer
Under the sun at nearby Bald Eagle State Park, the
annual Beta Sigma Beta/Sy Barash Regatta brings
you jive music from 10 to 5. And there is six-player
volleyball, two-man canoe races and Tug-of-War, if
your team doesn't weigh more than 1000 pounds.
And $2.00 gets you in. The Regatta tradition as the
best concert of the spring means this year it's John
Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, famous from
the movie, "Eddie & The Cruisers." CBS recording
artists, Synch, Sammy Atlantic & the Jersey All-
Stars all-Springsteen show. And Stolyn Hours, State
College's top band.
The Regatta. Sunday, April 26. Only $2.00.
Transportation from East Halls for a buck. Buy
tickets and register for events at the HUB. For the
