Jordan faced a dilemma prior to last
weekend: the Lady Lions had the
opportunity to compete in the Hoya
Invitational in Washington, D.C., or
the Tampa Invitational in Florida.
Either meet would have given her
squad the chance to qualify for the
upcoming Eastern College Athletic
Conference Regional Championships,
and there was even an outside possi
bility that NCAA qualifying stan
dards would be reached by some
individuals.
Jordan's solution to this quandary
was a simple one: taking advantage
of her situation, the Lady Lion men
tor divided her team into two fac
tions, sending the most capable
athletes to each location. The middle
distance runners and the throwers
were assigned to compete in the Hoya
Invitational; while the jumpers, re
lay teams, and heptathletes partici
pated in Tampa.
"It's not so much that one (squad)
is less experienced than the other, it's
just that the facilities (at each loca
tion) are more conducive to those
events," Jordan said.
Although there were no NCAA qual
ifying standards achieved over the
weekend, several Lady Lions neared
the standards necessary to qualify for
national competition. In addition,
three of the athletes from Penn State
added their names to the list of Lady
Lions already qualified to participate
in the ECAC Championships at
Fairfax, Va., May 19-16.
On Saturday in Washington, fresh
man Ann Daube qualified in her first
event of the season the javelin
with a distance of 132' 11 1 / 2 ", finishing

eighth overall and earning a trip to
the regional finals.
In Tampa, Lisa Gold qualified by
posting a time of 4:34.7 in the 1500-
meter event. Freshman Pam Connell
als9 qualified for the ECAC finals as
she amassed a total of 4,900 points in
the heptathalon competition, captur
ing third place. Jordan said Connell
and fellow freshman Carmen Mann,
have the potential to qualify for the
NCAA Championships at the Penn
Relays in Philadelphia, scheduled
April 21-22.
Another NCAA qualifying hopeful
who will participate in the Penn Re
lays spring track classic is sopho
more Ernestine Marsh. The fleet
footed Marsh barely missed qualify
ing for the national championships at
the Tampa Invitational with a first
place time of 59.78 seconds in the 400-
meter hurdles, her best showing in
the event so far this season. Marsh
won the ECAC 400-meter hurdles
championship in the outdoor season
last year, and finished fourth in the
100-meter hurdles.
Junior Jenny Williams was the only
other Lady Lion to earn a first-place
finish, as she improved her qualifying
height in.the high jump to 5' 8 1 / 2 ", her
best performance of the season in the
event.
• At the Hoya Invite, Teressa DiPer
na barely missed qualifying for the
regional finals with a time of 2:14.5 in
the 800-meter event, only two tenths
of a second off the ECAC standard.
This weekend Penn State will get a
break from its hectic travel schedule,
as the Lady Lions host the Nittany
Lion Relays at the Nittany Lion Out
door Track on Friday and Saturday.
The following week the team will
participate in the highly-competitive
Penn Relays.
