BALK Associated Press Writer INDIANAPOLIS A court ruling yesterday upholding the right of Ki wanis International to revoke a club’s license for admitting a woman mem ber “will certainly be taken notice of,” but the issue remains a state-by state issue, a Kiwanis spokesman said. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Ap peals in Philadelphia yesterday unan imously reversed a district court ruling that had permitted the Kiwanis Club in Ridgewood, N.J. , to keep its Kiwanis charter even though it had admitted a woman among its 28 members. Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions clubs are in various courts on the issue, said David Williams, public relations manager at Kiwanis headquarters in Indianapolis. The U.S. Supreme Court has accepted an appeal from California on the Rotary, he said. Williams hopes that case will be decided before the next Kiwanis con vention, July 5. “The issue is not whether organiza tions have to admit women but wheth er the organizations are private or not,” Williams said. Williams says Kiwanis was estab lished as a private organization with selective membership stemming from those recommended and ap proved by current members. The majority has voted to keep Kiwanis open to men only, he said. “We’re not talking about whether women should be members, we’re talking about who has the right to make the decision,” he said. When clubs affiliate with Kiwanis, they agree to abide by its bylaws, Williams said. Clubs which admit women as members no longer meet uniform membership requirements, and their licenses to operate as Kiwa nis members were therefore with drawn, which led to the legal action, Williams said. “We went to federal district court asking for an injuction to control use of our name. The lower court ruled in the club’s favor. The appellate court overturned this decision,” he said. The ruling was made under New Jersey’s anti-discrimination law. 3.50 3. Green Peppers 3.50 4.
