College of Science dean resigns, receives praise
By PATTY ESPER
Collegian Staff Writer
Thomas Wartik, dean of the College of Sci
ence, will retire next September after 36 years
at the University.
University officials said Wartik will be
missed for his dedication to the College of
Science and his fund-raising efforts.
“Dean Wartik has guided the College of
Science well during his years as dean,” Univer
sity President Bryce Jordan said in a prepared
statement. “His superb leadership and dedica
tion to science will be missed.
“He played a key role in attracting private
support to the College of Science, including the
recent $lO million gift from the Eberly family,”
Jordan said.

Wartik, 65, said he is retiring because it is
time for someone with fresh ideas to step in and
move the program upward.
He added that his years at the University
have been very satisfying and that he has
enjoyed working with students, faculty and
administrators.
Wartik said his role in working with the $2OO
million Campaign for Penn State has been
enjoyable, adding that the University is on its
way to becoming a first-rate research institu
tion.
“A first-rate institution is characterized by
the quality of its faculty, ahd these attributes
are necessary to recruit and hold good fac
ulty,” Wartik added.

“My job has been made much easier because
of the efforts of the College of Science faculty
and the encouragement and support I have
received from the central administration,” he
said.
William C. Richardson, executive vice presi
dent and provost, said Wartik has worked very
hard and with great success.
“He’s done an absolutely wonderful job
showing donors the ways in which they can
make a contribution to enhancing the quality of
both undergraduate and graduate experiences
in the College of Science,” Richardson said.
Wartik came to the University in 1950 as an
assistant professor of chemistry. In 1960, he
was named professor and head of the chemis
try department, and in 1971 he became dean of
the College of Science.
