Steelers' future begins now
By ALAN ROBINSON
AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH Both the Detroit
Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers have
three games remaining this season,
but to coaches Darryl Rogers of the
Lions and Chuck Noll of the Steelers,
it’s already 1987.
With the Steelers, 4-9, mathemati
cally eliminated from the playoffs
and the Lions, 5-8, all but out of
contention, both coaches say it’s time
for their teams to prove they can be
belter next season.
How do they do that? By becoming
better immediately instead of waiting
until training camp.
“We want to take our best players
right now and try to win with them,”
said Rogers. “Who are you devel
oping at this point of the season?”
“We want to be the best we can be
right now,” said Noll, whose Steelers
are suffering their worst season since

Perhaps that’s because the Steel

remember. They are enduring con

time since 1970-71 and have lost their
last two games, to Cleveland (37-31)
and the Chicago Bears (13-10), in
overtime.
They have lost five games by a

If that scenario sounds familiar to
Detroit fans, it should, because it also
fits the Lions.

Thanksgiving loss to the Green Bay
Packers.
Hippie was the starter at the begin
ning of the season, but Ferguson has
started for five weeks in a row since
Hippie was injured. Ferguson is ex
pected to start Sunday.
Not expected to play is first-round
draft choice Chuck Long, the former
lowa star who has completed the only
pass he has thrown this season.
Rogers has said Long isn’t ready to
play, just as Noll said rookie Bubby
Brister has yet to master the intrica
cies of pro football.
"It seems very simple to the fan, to
start a rookie quarterback, but each
situation must be judged indepen
dently,” Rogers said. “A quar
terback must be able to recognize
what the defense is doing.”

Bucs could trade Pena, Ray
By ALAN ROBINSON
AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh Pirates General Man
ager Syd Thrift said yesterday he is willing to deal
second baseman Johnny Ray or catcher Tony Pena at
next week’s winter baseball meetings “if the trade
would make us a better team.”
Thrift, who dealt 15-game winner Rick Rhoden to the
New York Yankees last week, said, “There are.no
untouchables on this team. Maybe we showed by
trading a pitcher who could win the Cy Young Award
that we’re willing to trade.”
The Pirates expect to entertain numerous offers at
the Hollywood, Fla. meetings for Pena, a three-time
All-Star Game catcher whose contract expires at the
end of the 1987 season.
But Thrift’s admission that Ray could be pried away
from the Pirates was a surprise since Ray, 29, enjoyed
his best major-league season in 1986, batting .301 with
seven home runs and 78 RBI.

trading quality guys like that,” Thrift said. “If we had
more top-quality guys, we wouldn’t be in last place and
we wouldn’t have lost 98 games last season.”
If Ray is traded, Thrift said his replacement could be
rookie Jose Lind, 22, who hit .263 at Nashua of the Class
AA Eastern League last summer. Lind bats leadoff and
Pirates Manager Jim Leyland has said one of his top
priorities is to get a leadoff hitter so he can move
center fielder Barry Bonds down in the batting order.
“He has the best range of any second baseman I’ve
ever seen,” Thrift said of Lind. “In no way would I rule
out him making our ballclub. He’s playing winter ball
and we’re getting great reports on him.... He might
be ready for the major leagues right now.”
If Ray remains with the Pirates, Thrift said Lind
could switch to shortstop, a position he played in
amateur baseball. Fielder Rafael Belliard won the
Pirates’ shortstop job last season, but batted only .233.
“We have some guys on our team who could help out
another team over the hump,” Leyland said. “Joe
Orsulak would be an excellent outfield addition for a
team and I would think an American League team
would be interested in Mike Diaz.”

Grapplers look to continue intensity
By ANN GARRETT
Collegian Sports Writer
The impressive 27-15 win Wednesday over No. 1-
ranked lowa was an important one for the Penn State
wrestling program a win the Lions and their fans
will not soon forget. But the squad knows the season is
still very young and they must continue to wrestle each
match and each tournament with as much intensity as
they did against the Hawkeyes.
The Lions will get a chance to prove they can do just
that today and tomorrow, when they host the 14th
Annual Penn State Invitational, which features 20
teams from West Virginia to New Hampshire. Sessions
begin each day at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Head Coach Rich Lorenzo said although the tourna
ment does not award a team title, it gives each
wrestler a lot of mat time.
“This is a wrestler’s tournament,” Lorenzo said.
“It’s set up so that every wrestler will get a minimum
of three bouts. So they’re going to get a lot of good
competition against a lot of schools they won’t (com
pete against) throughout the year.”

Approximately 32 wrestlers will compete at each
weight class. Penn State will enter at least two wres
tlers at each class, except at 142 potmds, where Joe
Hadge is the only entry.
Sophomore Ken Chertow said once the excitement
from the lowa win dies down, the Lions will look
forward to dominating the home mat tournament.
“I think everyone’s going to have to come down to
earth sometime today (Thursday),” Chertow said.
“We take a lot of pride in winning (the Invitational)
because it’s our home tournament. Even though
there’s no team scoring, we’ll know if we dominate.”
Chertow added that the total team effort put in
against lowa will still be evident in the weekend’s
individual-style tournament.
“It’s almost impossible to match the intensity of
(Wednesday night) that was something special,” he
said. “But even though it’s an individual tournament,
we’ll be there for each other as a team.”
Last year's Invitational featured five individual
titles for the Lions: Jim Martin (118), Tim Flynn (126),
now-graduated Chris Bevilacqua (150), Greg Elinsky
(167) and Dan Mayo (177).

Lady cagers set for lllini Classic
By MARK FURRY
Collegian Sports Writer
After thumping the Ohio University
Bobcats 92-63 Tuesday, Lady Lion
basketball Head Coach Rene Port
land should be basking in the glow of
a good old-fashioned blowout.
But like all coaches, Portland is
never totally satisfied, and she saw
several problems with Penn State’s
victory, most notably the absence of a
half-court offense. The Lady Lions
will try to iron this and other prob
lems out this weekend when the team
travels to the University of Illinois to
participate in the lllini Classic.
The Lady Lions face Washington
Friday night, with the winner meet
ing the Illinois-Eastern Michigan vic
tor Saturday.
“It’s nice to win a 30-point game,
but we didn’t like the fact that we
didn't do much with our half-court
offense,” Portland said. “There’s

But then again, who needs a half
court offense when Suzie McConnell
is pushing the ball up the court,
feeding scorers like Vicki Link, Lisa
Faloon and Lisa Lambert? All four
scored in double figures against the
Bobcats.
The All-American from Pittsburgh
dished out 12 assists Tuesday, and she
could, argueably, get Joe Paterno at
least five layups. So, OK coach,
what’s this bunk about the half-court
offense? Who needs it with Suzie and
her crew running circles around the
opposition?
“There is no doubt we are a running
team and we like to run,” Portland
said. “Our guards are our strong
point, but we’re not going to be able to
run against every team.”

teams Portland is talking about? The
Huskies return three starters from
last year's 24-6 Pac-10 champion
team, so the they will give the Lady
Lions a good game. The half-court
offense that was lacking against Ohio
will.have to surface if the Lady Lions
are to he successful this weekend.
Another problem Portland was con
cerned about was Penn State’s re
bounding. The Bobcats almost out
rebounded the Lady Lions, and many
of Penn State’s fast breaks were set
up by steals not rebounds. More
experienced teams will not turn the
ball over as often, and the Lady Lions
will have to hit the defensive boards
to start the fast break.
There is one problem that Portland
has no control over injuries. Junior
Bethany Collins had shoulder surgery
and is still not playing at 100 percent.
She saw only 11 minutes of action
Tuesday, and will help the rebound
ing situation when she returns.
