28—The Daily Collegian Friday, Oct. 24, 1986 Dirty sheets: By PAT ALMONY Collegian Staff Writer Most students put off doing their laundry until the last pair of underwear lays in the bottom of a dresser drawer. Even when the service is provided, students don’t take advantage of it The University Laundry Service is available to launder resident students’ sheets and pillowcases, many students do not use it, said John Bollman, manager of the laundry service. Although resident student’s sheets and pillow cases account for 40 percent of the work, the service is also responsible for cleaning uniforms for University employees, food service towels, lab coats, and linen from the Nittany Lion Inn. Bol lman said the service was used only 30 to 35 percent campuswide in September even though the service is incfuded in the cost of room and board. Male students typically have a higher usage rate, probably because many women students prefer to use their own linen, he said. “I prefer my own sheets because they match the decorations in my room and because I don’t trust what’s been on the sheets before I got them,” said Laura Tyrrell (freshmen-business). “Also neither of the sheets they give you are fitted 1 which makes it a pain to make your bed,” she said. Amanda Huber uses her own sheets too, but for a different reason. “I like variety,” Huber (freshman-psychology) said. I would rather have colored sheets rather than always having a hospital bed with white sheets. It’s not that I don’t use it because of sanitary reasons or anything.” Deficit soars to record $220 bi By TOM RAUM AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. budget deficit for 1986 soared to a record $220 billion, easily topping last year’s $212 billion shortfall but a full $lO billion short of what the Reagan administration had projected, Budget Director James C. Miller 111 dis closed yesterday. A spokesman for Miller said high er-than-anticipated revenues near OPEN: EAGLE SNACKS Many students don't use laundry services the end of the year and lower spend ing by federal agenices accounted for the unexpected savings. The spokesman, Ed Dale, also said that projections by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget suggest that the deficit will fall by $5O billion in 1987, to the vicinity of $l7O billion even if Congress enacts no further spending cuts. The White House budget office as recently as last August had estimated that the 1986 deficit for the fiscal year 7 a.m. to 12 Midnight 7 Days a Week Sour Cream & Bar-B-Q Potato Chips Sale ends Oct. 27, 1986 Some students said the low usage rate was because of the condition of the sheets, out-of-the way linen lockers, and general laziness. But most students who use the service noted its conve nience. “I think the service is good. If I had to wash my sheets myself, I’d probably never do it. It’s too much of a pain,” said Paul Daniels (sophomore sociology). Jill Reed (sophomore-French) agreed. “I use the service because I don’t want to go out and buy my own sheets and then wash them,” Reed said. Bollman said that the color of some students’ sheets at the end of each semester indicate that Reg. *1.49 99* that ended Sept. 30 would amount to $230.2 billion. The OMB is scheduled to release its final determination of the 1986 deficit early next week. However, Miller decided to confirm the raw figures in advance of the announcement as new reports began circulating about the dimensions of the deficit, Dale said. ' Those figures show that the 1986 flow of federal red ink rose to over $220 billion “instead of the $230 billion Meet the Author Richard B. A higher concentration of cleaning formula is applied in this case, but usually the linen is considered light soil and cleaned accordingly, Bollman said. In order to clean the usual 300,000 pounds of linen each week, 120,000 gallons of water and 185,000 cubic feet of gas must be used. A cleaning formula consisting of an alkali, powdered bleach, and a souring compound is added to the 45-minute wash ing process, resulting in an almost neutral pH which will not affect the skin. The laundry service saves money by charging students for lost or damaged sheets. Pillow cases cost $l.BO and sheets are $5.80 each, he said. we estimated in the midsession (Au gust) report,” Dale said. “The $lO billion improvement is a whole series of small changes, includ ing some increase in receipts and a wide variety of decreases in outlays,” Dale quoted Miller as saying. Defense spending was not among those decreases, Dale said. The $l7O billion 1987 deficit would still be far above the $144 billion deficit target under the nation’s Gramm-Rudman deficit reduction.
